Anything you can do when BG is too high?

I've posted most of what's happened the last few days in the last half of this thread - http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/changing-from-zero-carb-to-low-carb-food.192768/

Pretty Girl wasn't eating enough for me to give her a shot. So she didn't get a Lantus shot for about 3 days. Finally she started eating more today and I'm back to our usual routine of 1 unit morning and 1 at night.

To get her eating again I have her a very tiny amount of dry food this afternoon - like 10 small kibbles - and let her mostly free feed for a couple of days. Trying now to get back to our regular schedule. Pretty Girl's BG was way high before the evening shot - 509 - although it's been much higher at least some times in the past. Then she ate - a slightly different Fancy Feast but high in protein and low in carbs - and I gave her shot. Clearly she feels awful. Usually her BG goes up quite a bit after she's eaten - I am told this is normal.o

Is there anything at all I can do? Or I just have to let it work itself out? Please tell me what you would do.

I just found her in the other room eating the dry Iams food from my only cat who won't eat wet food. She couldn't have eaten much. Did I do right to take it away from her?

How to remain calm?

I wouldn't let kitty eat kibble. Too many carbs. She did eat wet food so that should be ok. If she is till hungry you could give her more fancy feast.

Pretty Girl is likely so high because she hasn't had insulin for three days. Lantus is a depot insulin, it will take a few days if shots to build up the depot again. You will have to keep giving shots and waiting for the depot to build, If a cat isn't eating, and she is high, you can usually give her some insulin. A cat who is getting anesthesia and cannot eat, typically gets half a dose. Did you manage to get some ketone testing strips? I would be testing ketones, at least daily, while in high numbers.

It's more important that she eat something. If you are still transitioning from dry to wet, you can pulverize some dry and sprinkle it on the wet to entice her.

Thank you both. Yes, she ate wet food tonight before I found her with the kibble and ate more wet food when I took the dry food away.

I have learned today that I have previously known almost nothing about Lantus. :-( Pretty Girl did start eating again this morning and ate some free feed throughout the day (which don't normally do - only to get her eating again) and ate fairly well tonight too. I think she wants more food or dry kibble as a reaction to being so high.

I was following the vet's instructions about only giving the insulin if she ate half her food.

She is basically totally transitioned to wet food and has been for several months - yesterday and today being exceptions.

I did get the ketone testing strips and hope to do that soon. I will likely take her to the vet in the morning and ask them to check for that as well. The vet will give her subq fluids.

Is it right that mostly I just have to wait out the high BG until the Lantus depot builds?

Getting her more active is a good idea but not possible tonight I don't think.

Do I need to try to stay up with her all night??? I did that for most of last night and I am wiped out.
