Alice had DKA and hospitalization at the beginning of the month.

I found a protruding mass on Alice's belly in the winter, after her FD DX. Feels like a nipple but it stays swollen.

There was an ER doc from her hospitalization, I asked about it, it was suggested it's a mammary tumor and I read some stuff last night that has me terrified.

So please feel free to dump any and all knowledge and experience here. I would like some.

Thank you.

It really needs to be biopsied to see if it's just a cyst or possibly a cancerous tumor. It's not a big deal to remove them when they're small but you really do need to find out. It can spread up thru the mammary chain if it is cancerous.

HUGS - things like this really suck.... :(

I feel terrible because it's been at least 6 months.

I read they are highly malignant and that they should not be biopsied before actual removal though.

I am low income and ready receiving DCIN help for Alice.

Any personal experiences with •any• cat cancer would be helpful to hear, too, probably.

"A preliminary biopsy is usually not recommended because 80 to 85% of the masses in the mammary gland of cats are malignant. Regional lymph nodes (lymph glands) should be palpated carefully; fine-needle aspiration or surgical removal are necessary to determine the presence of metastases."

This is part of what scared me. But explains the biopsy issue.

I had to say goodbye to my Twiggy because of mammary cancer. This was after I had her about a year. I adopter her as an untreated diabetic. She was a breeder and thus was fixed late in life. By the time it was diagnosed it was too late for surgery. If caught early the treatment is to remove both mammary chains.
The drug Palladia has shown good results.

I am so sorry for your loss.

How early is caught early? She's had this lump since at least December. I'm so scared. I don't have the money but I contacted the veterinary college in my state which is about an hour and a half away. I had not focused on it yet this month until I worked on DKA stabilization.

Do you know how large her tumor was? Had it metastasized?
