Anyone with free unused Cat insulin! I'm losing hope :(

Rhiannon, I'm happy that Shadow is off her juice. I just am losing faith now because this morning Pooper's glucose tested at 507. Just when I thought he couldn't go any higher he ends up doing that. I just don't understand it. Why has he gone from staying in the low to mid 100s to now showing nothing but 300-500's now. :( I can't afford to go pay $100 for Lantus or Levemir or whatever works the longest in the system. What cat insulin can I get where it will stay in his system the longest and regulate his BG the greatest? I'm just desperate stage now because when something goes wrong then I start thinking the worst of everything. I mean how else can you feel when you have a cat that was doing fairly well not too long ago and then is suddenly going real high into the Ketone stage? I just wish someone had unused Pens from their cats being OTJ that I could get from them.
 
Okay here are my choices for insulin based on what I can research. Lantus or PZI Bovine insulin? I just need one that lasts the longest in the body and works the best because Poopers seems to not eat much through the night when I am sleeping and so if I were to give him insulin like at 9pm at night then I would like to be ensured that he will be covered through the night and his number will stay healthy through the night. I know Novalin wears off before 6 hours and yes I know he then goes untreated all night long.
 
There are several offerings in supply closet - I replied to your post in there with links - check it out -- whether you use lantus, levimer or prozinc - all three are good options -- you actually may find using prozinc is easier.....and if you can get it free - hey why not you know....
 
I'm no dosing expert, but I wonder if maybe you started increasing his dose too fast and he's actually getting too much insulin, which is causing the high numbers you've been seeing and the 507 this morning. There was a good post on the Facebook site awhile back about how less is sometimes better, or too much insulin can cause high numbers.
 
There could be some other factor effecting his bg. Sometimes cats don't show symptoms of infection. I would definitely get to the vet and have them check him out. It could be something as simple as a UTI or even bad teeth. I know with Hidey I had no clue his teeth were bad. He was acting and eating fine and come to find out he had 3 that were REALLY bad and had to be pulled. Cats do their best not to show pain. That could explain why the numbers were getting better and are now getting worse. Pain, stress, infection.....all raise bg. I'd get to the vet and have him checked out and at the same time get new insulin. As to the type, once again, you have to decide whats best for you & your cat (and schedule) With levemir it HAS to be constant and ON TIME. Say your dosing 1 unit in the A.M. & P.M. and one day his numbers are off you can't just say well tonight I'm going to give him more or less, it has to be a process. With PZI you have the ability to use a sliding scale (if it gets to that point).
 
Dirtysoap, what about Lantus? From what I see, the Bovine PZI's insulin closely resembles a cat's insulin so maybe I should try that? I know I can test in 12 hours and even halfway but I want an insulin that is more designed for cats and will heal his pancreas better and keep his bg in healthy range for a longer duration.
 
LOL wow, some how I seen Levemir instead of Lantus. Lantus works just like levemir though. I went with Prozinc which is basically PZI. Hidey had great results with it and I like that unlike Lantus & levemir you can be more flexible. I know if I was using lantus or levemir I would of stressed myself out more when Hidey was working towards remission. When he started going into remission there were days where I had to reduce the amount of insulin and some nights I couldn't even give him a shot at night. With lantus and levemir you really cant do that. If you miss a dose or lower the dose you can get wonky numbers because it builds up in the system so you have to slowly find the right amount again. I also dont like (mind you this is just from reading posts since I have never used them) that it seems easy to miss the right dosage. You give too little you get high numbers, you give too much you end up with high numbers lol
 
Lantus, Levemir, ProZinc and BCP PZI all good insulins. Each cat is different so there rally is no way to know which is best for Poopers. I I said before, get your vet to to get the free sample of BCP PZI. The sample is 5 ml of U100.
 
Ok thanks larry! Just don't hear many on here talk about BCP PZI insulin. I would be hesitant to use anything if most users on here do not use it. :(
 
Yea. The thing I have to endure is waiting period. I would have to print out a form and then take it to my Vet and then they would have to fill it out and then fax it to get any sample. Then not sure on the waiting length until get it. In other news, I can't get any Lantus pens by individual only and I have to buy the box. They don't carry Prozinc but carry Levemir and Lantus along with the other cheap junk insulins like Humulin and Novalin or they are the same then still junk insulins. So not looking cheap any way I look at it. Just tired of seeing him go down and then +6 hours later going right back up.

I have used it and it is a very good insulin. Ask your vet to order a vial for you.

What is your current dose of insulin? I would recommend that when you start over with a new insulin you also start with a low dose, such as 1 unit. Give at least 1 week between dose increases and only increase it by 1/2 unit. By following this method, you should be able to find Pooper's optimal dose.
 
Between 1 to 2 units given that his BG has been going up alot and fluctuating. When it is in the 200s I give 1 unit. Since its been 400+ I give 2 units. I figure once I change insulins that I would start at 1 unit unless told otherwise.
 
Is there any way you could shoot the Novalin every 8 hours until you get a better insulin?

Yeah I can shoot every 8 hours. I just got done shooting him because he was at 348. I gave him 1.5 units.
