Anyone Using Atopica (cyclosporine) for Stomatitis??

Poor Frankie has stomatitis again and the vet said they are seeing good results with Atopica. Not only is this stuff expensive at $40 for 5ml, but when I read the side effects I'm kind of nervous about giving it to him!

Any one have experience with this stuff???

I used it with one of my civvies for severe allergies several years ago.

The shape of the pill was difficult to use (too big to use a pill pocket and roundish capsule). At $2 per pill, I really hated to lose one. They were designed for dogs. The pill was about the size of a cat food kibble, and trying to get my cat to swallow it was hard -- using the pry open and pop in method.

It did help his allergy flare ups. (scratching / licking himself raw in areas on his chest / front legs) Traditional steroids worked better, but eventually lead to immune system problems with excessive use.

This stuff is liquid ....thankfully! Frankie is a beast to pill!

Gail, what else have you tried? Does he still have his teeth?

Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant so it wouldn't be my first drug of choice.

Hi I just joined this forum and noticed your post. I don't know about using medication for Stomatitis, but one of my feral rescues had a terrible case of chronic Stomatitis caused by tooth resorption. He had all his teeth extracted and the Stomatitis cleared-up within weeks and has not returned. It seemed an extreme measure to do a full extraction, but in my cat's case, it fixed the problem at source.

Deanie - Yes he still has his teeth. This showed up a month or so ago and within days he got real sick so I'm suspecting calici. He was on doxycycline and pred and it "almost" went away. Well now it's back and a dental specialist recommended Atopica to my vet.

My vote is for more doxycycline or zithromycin (sp?). I know full mouth extraction is supposed to work real well but it just seems so extreme at this point.....besides it is expensive..... $1200 for Reagan :shock:
