Anyone try more carbs to slow drops?

Bud seems to be a fast dropper. AMPS was 403 and at +3 he was down to 190 already. We were leaving and going to be gone for a bit so I gave him some 13% carbs food. When I got home at +8 I thought sure he'd be rising but he tested 88! I was wondering if maybe a little higher carbs at shot time would work better for Bud to slow the drops and maybe keep his numbers from going all over the place. Any thoughts?

Oh I was thinking of splitting one 5.5 ounce can of a little higher carbs at shot time between 6 cats and then leaving low carb out to graze on during the day. So, not a ton of higher carb food, just a bit.

I am new here so am not in a position to advise you but I just wanted to tell you that when I joined the forum my cat used to drop quickly from high numbers. It was always a bit scarey as I never knew how far she would drop. Then she would bounce back up to high numbers and the same thing would happen again. The wonderful people here will teach you how to slow the drop with higher carb food. There is definitely things you can do to correct the problem. My cat Sheba is now in much lower numbers and has stopped the rapid drops. Hopefully someone will come along soon who can help.

One thing you can try is to give the gravy off higher carb foods. That can bring them up but not fill them up, if they continue to drop. It is a way to handle numbers heading into hypo territory. It may not solve your issue when you are leaving. If it's a common pattern, I 'd do as Bj suggests and give a few smaller dabs of his meal in those first hours after the shot. You might have to adjust your shot times so you'd have a little more time in the am, after the shot, before you have to leave for work?

Once you see how lev is working for Bud, you may need to reduce his insulin. You'll need advice from lev users to figure out the dose that will keep him low, but not too low.
I think at least a few more days of data for Bud on Levimir will be really helpful. Keep up the testing and hopefully some pattern will eventually emerge.

Thanks for the replies! I had to take my daughter to the dentist this morning so I was able to grab a +3 before heading to work. AMPS was 411 and the +3 was 539 so no worries about him dropping low today. I think he might have gotten into some hamster food last night. Of course, since I need some numbers without such a variable but oh well, I'll keep getting as many numbers as I can to hopefully find what works best for Bud.

Tell him to go for the hamster next time instead of the hamster's food. Much lower carb ;) . (I'm of course just joking and am sure that would make for a sad day around your house.)

:D That's great and made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that! My daughter lost her first hamster after having it for 2 days when a friend of hers that was over slipped and fell on it. Yeah, not a good day....

That doesn't sound like much fun at all. I'm sure her friend was mortified. Those small pets can be a bit delicate.
