Im trying to find more varieties for Hidey that include meat not seafood. He makes it difficult because he likes the real texture type foods. I did try adding water to the pate recently and that was a no go. So the main ones I have right now are Tiki chicken varieties and am looking for a few more since he has an over abundance of seafood ones lol. While searching I found "against the grain" which seems to be good. I think the carbs are .46% for the chicken and pumpkin samba variety but I always worry Im not using the calculator right. I was looking at the other flavors too and they dont look too bad. I also found "Fussie cat" and they seem to be low carb. Just curious if anyones tried it and if the carbs are actually low or not. Any red flags on these brands?

Thank you

I seem to recall looking at the Fussie Cat when looking for food options for Eddie. I took quick peek at the ingredient list on the non-seafood varieties, and one contains potato and the other contains brown rice. For me personally, I try to avoid added starches (potato), and obviously grains (brown rice).

I've not seen the "Against the Grain" before. The Chicken & Pumpkin Samba looks alright.

Have you looked at the Weruva Cats in the Kitchen varieties? They have a similar consistency (shreds) to the Tiki cat. We mainly feed the Chicken Frickasee, which has a 2% carbs. The Cats in the Kitchen varieties are a little spendier, but they are cheaper than Tiki.

Right now I have

Avoderm:
Tuna & Prawns (0% carbs)
Tuna & Chicken with vegetables (1.97% carbs)

Tiki:
Puka Puka Luau (0% carbs)
Hanalei Luau (0% carbs)
Papeeko Luau (0% carbs)
Napili Luau (0% carbs)
Koolina Luau (0% carbs)
Hookena Luau (.99% carbs)
Lanai Luau (1.97% carbs)

Weruva:
Outback Grill (.99% carbs)
Marbella Paella (.99% carbs)
Paw Lickin Chicken (2.98% carbs)
Meow Luau (2.98% carbs)
On the cat wok (3.98% carbs)

Weruva (cats in the kitchen):
Goldie Lox (3.97% carbs)
Splash Dance (3.98% carbs)
Two tu tango (4.97% carbs)
Funk in the trunk (7.95% carbs)
Lamb burgini (7.96% carbs)

I am going to be cutting out certain ones due to the carb %. Hidey has been doing great on his numbers but it seems that he is carb sensitive because when I give him any of the higher carb options like the cats in the kitchen his numbers go up. I know he will fluctuate, but I'm trying to get them a bit lower and stay there. I hope when he has his dental, which is scheduled for 4/17, his numbers will be even better. I feel bad because I watch his numbers like crazy now, especially since he hasnt needed insulin lately, and I'm so worried about his numbers going back up because of my neglect. I have tried to take him off the dry and that was a disaster so me and my husband agreed it was better to spend more money on the Young again zero carb food to have him happy and a low carb option. My problem is I know he can't/shouldn't have alot of seafood although its his favorite. I am also trying to watch his phosphorus intake now. He has no kidney issues at the moment, and Im not staying at the level as if i=he did but Im also trying to avoid the sky high pho options.

Hi,

I just had a look at the two foods you linked to.
They are both high protein and lower fat foods. They do contain some carbs in the form of tapioca, potato, and (in the Fussie Cat) green pea.

When I run the given figures through my calculator I get:
5.6% carbs for the Chicken and Pumpkin food
4.2% carbs for the Fussie Cat food
(However for the Fussie Cat food the label gave two different figures for the fat content, a min of 1.5% and a max of 2.5% so I went for 2% for the purpose of this calculation. That means the carb content could be a tad less or more than the 4.2% depending on what the fat content actually is.)

And do remember that what is written on the label may not actually be a true representation of what is in the can at any given time. In order to do a really accurate calculation we'd need the 'as fed' figures from the manufacturer.

With my own cat I do a calculation to get a 'ballpark figure' for the carb content and then try it out on my cat to see what happens! This may or may not be something you want to try at home...
