Hi!
I am hoping there is someone in Canada who can suggest a good canned food for my cat who is in remission and also diagnosed with Kidney Failure. Many of the brands suggested to me I have had trouble finding - probably since a lot of people are from the US. I have been feeding him Friskies Turkey and Giblets since It is both low carb and lower phosphorous but he isn't eating much and I think its because he is getting sick of the same kind every day. Any suggestions?

I have also tried EVO 95% Chicken and Turkey but he lost interest in that too.
Does anyone know the carb / phosphorous amount in Friskies Chicken Pate?

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

I am feeding him the Turkey and Giblets Pate so I thought it was 189 for phosphorous.. Althought it doesn't say Special Diet but I don't think any of the packaging in Canada does. I can't seem to find any other of the low carb friskies around here.

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Where did you get the 189 from?

The " Friskies Turkey and Giblets dinner 338" doesnt say special diet on the list either..

I looked at the friskies site - doesnt look like we have special diet in Canada. You might need to change brands.

There are two Friskies Turkey and Giblets listed on the list you sent me.

5% - Friskies Special diet Turkey and Giblets dinner pate 189
8% - Friskies Turkey and Giblets dinner 338

Does your can say pate on it?
i think the one that doesn't have pate says "gravy"?

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

I don't know if it helps any, but I had contacted the Friskies people a few months ago and they said they do not sell the special diet ones in Canada at all. My cat Chyna is in remission and has CRF as well. I used to feed some of the Evo ones. I also fed some of the Wellness, Natures Variety, Merrick BG and Weruva ones, and now am feeding the Ziwipeak Lamb but these are all pricier than Friskies/Fancy Feast.

I have two websites in Canada that I order some of my foods from since my small town doesn't have much variety, let me know if you'd like to check them out if you can't find foods where you live:) I've been told to try keep the phosphorus under 250 (and under 1% DM) or lower if I can for the CRF...did you see Dr. Lisas full list? http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf I see you have the shortcut that was done on this site to narrow it down, but it is a larger one to look at if you see more foods that you are curious about :-D

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Yes, the can I have says Pate on it.

I went on a search for cat foods off that list yesterday and found the Merrick Cowboy Cookout, as well as Wellness.I haven't tried him with those two yet. I also bought a couple cans of the EVO 95% beef but like the EVO turkey he isn't interested in it.

Yes, Raeifo, if you could give me those websites that would be awesome! You mentioned your cat also has CRF. Are you doing anything else for treatment aside from special food? My vet suggested Ace inhibitors. I've read there are pros and cons to that. Do you know what stage your cat is at?

Thank you!

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Thank you. I have seen that site but have been trying for weeks to join the forum to talk to others with cats who also have CRF and it will not let me.

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Can you e-mail them?

Yahoo's attempt to improve their interface has wrecked access for a lot of folks.

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Careful with the Cowboy Cookout, it is a new formula I guess, I've been reading that they changed their recipes but don't have the breakdown yet so the numbers on the food list are the old formulas? Something in it caused Chyna to spike a bit in her BG too (on the old formula) so I ended up mixing it with another really low carb beef food but she's now on an allergy diet trying to see what makes her itchy :? Chyna is on Epakitin (phosphorus binder), B vitamins for anemia, Pepcid AC for stomach acid and a bit of pumpkin daily to help her poos ;-) We just found out today that we get to start subq fluids now too. I think she's stage 3 CKD. I don't know anything about Ace inhibitors? My vet is suggesting ESAs but I've been reading on Tanyas site and I don't think anemia is that bad yet to use them on my kitty. I'm on the yahoo forum too, but I joined quite some time ago.

I see you're in ON so I think you'd like the website in QC, if you spend over $69 shipping is free (and if you spend less than that it's a flat shipping rate of $9.99). It's http://www.baileyblu.com/ . They have the Natures Variety, Weruva, and Ziwipeak that I've had trouble finding as well as Wellness and of course other brands :-D I've also used one out of Vancouver- http://www.timpets.com/ which do charge shipping at rates depending on what you spend so I prefer the other one but they are good too. Hope that helps you find something you can feed. The best part is they ship BY CAN not by case so you can try it without spending tons on cases of food

PS, Chyna ate EVO for a bit, then started turning up her nose at it too angry(2)_cat

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Sorry for the late reply. Thank you!
I tried the Wellness, Cowboy Cookout, and the EVO 95% Beef, and reattempted the EVO 95% Turkey again but he doesn't seem to want to eat any of those so I will have to look into the ones mentioned above. So hard finding something he likes that works for both Diabetes and CRF.
Kittycat seemed okay all yesterday and then in the middle of the night he threw up a large amount and then started peeing blood. He is now on antibiotics for an infection, again. Raeifo - you mentioned your cat is stage 3 CRF - has your cat had issues with bladder infections?

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Hi again! I'm Rachel if you want my name, I wish I could change my username, I didn't realize when I picked it that I was stuck with it :?

I'm sorry that Kittycat isn't feeling well  Chyna hasn't had any bladder infections yet (paws crossed it stays that way!). She has been on Cosequin for years for her arthritis, and it is supposed to have stuff in it that also supports bladder health? I don't know, but maybe that has helped or maybe she isn't prone to them:) Hope I didn't jinx anything by saying that ;-)

I know it's hard to find foods for both CRF and diabetes! She did love the Weruva (but they are lower calorie) and the Nature's Variety ones before we found out about her allergies. She hasn't turned her nose up at the Ziwipeak Lamb yet either...but she's never been much of a picky eater (again, not yet, anti jinx  ) except when she wasn't on Pepcid AC for her stomach acid when we were figuring all this out we had a few panicked weeks of finger and spoon feeding. Good luck on the food hunt, I hope the antibiotics perk Kittycat up soon! :-D :-D

You're not stuck with your user name, I changed mine after joining. It's in the User control panel under 'edit account settings'

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Sweet, done, I can't believe I didn't find that when I was trying before :? ! Thanks Barb!

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Rachel, which of the Weruva foods were you feeding? I have bought the Paw Lickin Chicken and Mideast Feast as well as a couple of the BFF flavours. Tuna and Chicken Chuckles and Tuna and Salmon Soulmates. I don't want to feed anything to mess up remission!

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

So far the only thing that seemed to spike Chynas BG was yogurt that I was using for a probiotic, and cowboy cookout...I don't know why, but every cat is different and some are more sensitive to carbs, we try to aim for under 5 and test more when using a new food or supplement to see. For Weruva, we only tried the Paw Lickin Chicken (which she loved) until we found out her allergy was most likely chicken and turkey:( I didn't try mideast feast but it's under 10 so should be good, depending on how carb sensitive kittycat is! I did finally find the Weruva Steak Frites which weren't in Canada yet when I looked before, and bought two cans (online shopping) but haven't tried them yet. I've tried all the BFF flavors as well with no problems but only fed those once in a while since they are all fish based. Have you tried Wellness? I could always find that one in local pet stores, the turkey one is decent, as are a few others for carbs and phos, so are the Nature's Variety Duck. How is kittycat feeling, is the bladder infection better now? Hope so

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Thank you! He seems to be doing well on the Paw Lickin Chicken. I just hope he doesn't get sick of it. I did try a couple cans of wellness but he wasn't interested in it. (I think it was the turkey). I haven't been able to find Wellness Core to try. Haven't seen Nature's Variety yet either. He still has a day of antibiotics left but so far so good for clearing the bladder infection. :) He seems to be getting them often so I'm hoping him being on a higher quality food will help with that.

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

Oh good I'm glad he likes the fuds and is feeling better :-D I hope that the bladder infection stays away! Both the Wellness Core and Natures Variety are sold on both websites I mentioned in my above post, if you need to get other foods and are ok with ordering online ;-) I couldn't find them anywhere either in my small town :? BUT I am pretty excited as we just had a new pet store open here, and they carry frozen raw foods, and some Natures Variety and Weruva! So it's a start to have something local that I can actually feed, hopefully. And the lady can get me a case of Ziwipeak too for a decent price, about the same as online. I'm hoping she'll decide to carry it, lol. How silly am I, to be soooo excited about cat food

Re: Anyone in Canada with a remission/CRF kitty? need food h

If your cat needs a certain medicine, or will eat only some foods that raise BG, but are OK for the kidney issues, so what....kidney health trumps diabetes.

there are a few Royal Canin foods... Renal LP has a bit of gravy, and there's also a reduced protein pate, but if your cat prefers some other food, then mix the renal with the other food, because bottom line.... the cat's gotta eat..
