Anyone have experience with Fatty Liver and DKA?

I posted previously, but Pringles was diagnosed this week with DKA and then after the ultrasound, she was also identified to have Fatty Liver. We started all of the treatment for DKA and then they told us about the Fatty Liver. So upon our initial consultation, they stated that she would be released Monday and now I am hearing that she would need to get an esophgeal feeding tube or a tube into her stomach? I'm a little concerned about this, but the ER stated that this is needed, as we have to ensure she is getting enough nutrition into her stomach. Complication could include a clogged feeding tube or infection on the site. They sstated that she could have this in a couple of weeks or could be a couple of months, just depending on when she starts eating for herself.

She is still at the vet on IV fluids and they are monitoring her electrolyte levels and have been giving her the supplements for the electrolytes that are out of wack. I am concerned that after all of this, she may not even recover once she is released to me. Does anyone have experience with this? I appreciate any responses as this is very stressful and the last thing I want to do is put Pringles into a situation where she is in more discomfort than she was before.

Your cat can do well for a tube to get over fatty liver. First, join Yahoo's Feline Assisted Feeding group. They have tons of info on fatty liver. You take it one day at a time and if a complication arises, then you can treat it. Shiloh had 2 bouts of inappetance, one lasted 7 months and one lasted 2.5 months. A tube saved his life both times. He was near death. Donna

The esophageal tube is much less invasive than a stomach peg tube and works beautifully. Good that she is getting fluids and her electrolytes monitored during the DKA period. Also, I used Clinicare high potency liquid diet for my cats that had tubes. Should be no clogging with that and it gives the liver all the nutrients it needs to turn around. She can pull through this and once she starts feeling better don't be surprised to see the tube pulled out by her once she starts eating.

Cyn's Cosmo had DKA, HL and pancreatitis. He had an e-tube too. He was very very ill, but with a lot of hard work on Cyn's part, he pulled through. See their story here

Your cat will be able to meow just fine.

Here's some info on Dr. Lisa's website about feeding tubes.

My cat had dka and HL at the same time about two years go, and she had the e-tube. They are just so sick they can't eat - so this helps them get well.

Sending positive vibes your way!

UPDATE: Re: Anyone have experience with Fatty Liver and DKA?

Well we went in to see Pringles this afternoon and it appears that she is doing worse than yesterday. The vet indicated that her ketone test seems to be negative, but it appears that her electrolytes are still out of wack and they had to continue to provide her with phosphoras and potasium. She was very week and lethargic and looked worse than she did yesterday. They are moving her to a specialist tomorrow, but I don't know that we will move forward if we don't see any improvement in her electrolyte levels. She is keeping the food down that they a tube feeding, but her liver is still not producing the electrolytes it needs to. Since we cannot guarantee how long this will take, unfortunately if there is no improvement by tomorrow on her liver issue, we may have to let her go.... which I'm very sad to say. The costs to keep her there on an unknown basis without knowing any outcome is just something we won't be able to do. At the state she is in, they will not do the surgery for the e-tube for her to go home unless there is improvements but at this point they haven't given guidelines on how long this may take...

I do appreciate everyone's comments and help on my previous posts.

I'm so sorry that she hasn't improved; these are two tough conditions to treat and there is never any guarantee although cats can and do pull through! Go with what your heart tells you to do and we're here either way

R.I.P. Re: Anyone have experience with Fatty Liver and DKA?

We had decided last night if there was no improvement by today we would put her to sleep. Recieved a phone call at 1am and she went into respiratory arrest following a feeding treatment and passed away. RIP Pringles, my sweet kitty.

You can know that you tried and did all you could do. And she led a happy, love-filled life. What more can a kitty ask for? I am so sorry that you went through such turmoil at the end.

My heart goes out to you. I lost a kitty to Fatty Liver several years ago, and it still bothers me. A feeding tube was never offered because he was still eating at the time of diagnosis. Or so we thought. We did our best to nurse him, but it didn't work. Just know that you did all you could, and were seeking the right treatments. Pringles knows how much you loved her, and she had a wonderful life with you. Many, many hugs!

OH NO! I am so very sorry for your loss. Sending many cyber hugs. Pringles is flying free now, whole and healthy over the Rainbow Bridge rb_icon
