My Buddy is dx'd IAA and was thinking of switching from Lantus to Lev. Was wondering if anyone can give any insight on specific's concerning Lev?

Thanks Jan

Hi - we are just getting prepared to have testing done and could be in same situation as you, results will tell. Several of the wise ones are advising & following our condo. You might want to go there and PM one of them or post in our condo to get their attention. Did you get your testing done at MSU??

Condos to check out:

Good Luck & we should stay in touch.

hi jan. here's a list of the IAA kitties taken from the sticky in the High Dose Group:

Running count of IAA cats and their moms:
2008 – 2
Sandy and Black Kitty
Sharyn and Fiona

2009 – 3
Christina and Stormy(also + for acro)
Laur and Cole (also + for acro)
Jan and Buddy

sandy/black kitty used lantus & R. last i heard, sharyn/fiona was using lantus. i *think* laur was using lev with cole. i don't know about christina/stormy.

i saw your post in caryl/alex's condo this morning. please do not be afraid of making a switch to lev because of what happened with caryl's alex. jojo and i recommend a dose reduction when caregivers have switched their kitties from lantus to lev because often times the initial lev response is similar to what alex experienced. the dose can be brought back up quickly after just a couple of days (after we see buddy's initial response to lev). in the case of a high dose kitty, the initial reduction would be greater than the reduction we would normally suggest for a kitty on a lower dose when making the switch.

Susan:Yes had testing done in 2009. I was just curious about differences between Lantus (which we use) versus Levimir!!

Sienne:Thanks, I did read that the other day quickly, and had forgotten, so thank you for sending me back there. I saved it this time in drafts!!

Jill: Again my bad memory!!!! I have read that also, I'm even on the list and I forgot!!! ohmygod_smile So thanks for reminding me.
I need to go and read again slowly, what you and jojo discussed on Lantus/Levimir.

Thanks to all of you!

Shadoe and Oliver are not IAA kitties, but acro and we switched both from Lantus to Lev.
Shadoe switched at a crazy time and there were a couple no shots so there was likely a depleted shed that played into the picture. We did decrease from 10u to 5u, but due to her numbers and the unknown.

Oliver was switched 4u for 4u, but he's up to 14u now, so again, he was getting less then he needed and it would not have been an issue for him.

As the others have said, you can easily give less and move up again but give too much and it's a problem.

and if i remember correctly, oliver was due for an increase at the time of his first shot of lev. i seem to remember taking that into consideration...

I should also add that we were using R and Oliver's numbers were up in the 400's, so a little extra for him would have not cause him to plummet and I did hold the R for a couple shots, so you could say it was a bit of a decrease in the total combined insulin.

If you shot a bit less, it would be safer I think

Hi Jan..
Another reason not to be scared is because I recommended Alex's dose be kept deliberately high due to his ketone problems, one bout of which he experienced less than a week ago. I would not recommend that for you since Buddy is not "ketone prone".

Jan,
Like I said to you, I feel that Alex is doing better so far on Levemir..even though he dropped so much at first. I encouraged keeping his dose higher as well. FOR ME, dealing with ketones or even the thought of them, is a lot harder than feeding up a low blood glucose situation. I don't even consider what happened with Alex a "situation", or even scary. He's fine, he wasn't in danger at any point and I knew he would be fine. ECID, and Buddy wouldn't be dosed the same way as Alex was. That wouldn't happen to him

OK I made an error when I said both my acro kitties are not IAA, as I received Oliver's results and he is positive IAA with a result of 60.

So yes we are using Lev and I did switch Oliver from Lantus to Levimir.
