Anyone feeding Purina One dry foods

There was a disturbing post on an email Yahoo list this morning about Purina One dry cat food. Although I don't want to alarm anyone, I feel it's important to pass on to the board, especially since many new people come here feeding dry food to their cats. And as we have seen in the past, however, canned food can be affected sometimes too. These cases sound suspiciously like the Melamine poisonings from 2007. I hope they are not old news being recirculated.

Subject: [FH] OT: Purina One may have been cause of two cats' deaths

I received an email from a friend of mine about someone on a forum she's on sharing what happened with her sister's two cats. Purina One Dry Cat Food may be the cause of two cats' deaths. The following is the post from the person whose sister lost her kitties.

>>
We don't know that the food is the cause, but everyone needs to be aware of a strange coincidence regarding Purina One Dry Food that is going on between our house in California, and my sister's house in Ohio. My sister in Ohio had one cat that started vomiting about 2 months ago. She thought it might be hairballs, but he lost the use of his back legs. His blood work came back ok, so the vet chalked it up to a blood clot, and he started feeling better. He came home, and was fed the same food. Then, her cat Franklin had the same problem; vomiting and losing the use of his back legs. The same with him; blood work was good, and vet chalked it up to a strange coincidence. (BTW both cats indoors, previously healthy as a horse, and being fed Purina One Indoor).

A few weeks ago, her first cat, Ernie, declined again, and passed away after having another bout of the same symptoms; this time the vomit had blood in it. This morning Franklin, the second cat passed away. Since his first hospitalization, his blood work got bad; kidneys and liver. He was also vomiting with blood in it. Both cats were drinking water excessively. Her vets still don't see what would have caused this to happen in both indoor pets. She has filed a claim with Purina One, and has spoken to the attorneys. She is also taking Franklin to the Vet School for a post mortem.

Now my California story....mine is only a week's worth of illness story. I have been feeding my cats Purina One SmartBlend Chicken & Rice for at least a year. My cats have been drinking a lot of water-noticed the increase a few weeks ago, and chalked it up to the heater being on. Bebe, my indoor 1 1/2 year old healthy as a horse male cat started vomiting liquid green....then yellow bile, and lost his appetite completely. He also had diarrhea. On the second day I took him into the vet. They took x-rays, and thought they saw a bowel obstruction. The vet did exploratory surgery, and found nothing but highly irritated bowels, not even a hairball. He stayed in for a couple of nights. She did take biopsies of his intestines, which we have not gotten back. Then our 22 pound cat Lenny (also no history of illness, and healthy as a horse) started the same barfing Thursday....after he barfed bile again on Friday morning, I pulled the Purina One, went out and got 5 different kinds of food without the Purina Label; Wellness Core, Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Max Cat, and Innova to see which one they like best...Lenny barfed the last time Friday morning, but as of last night, the barfing has stopped, no diarrhea, appetite is back, water consumption has decreased, and BeBe, staples and all, is running around.

I have called Purina on this, as I still have the bag and the remainder of the food. I pressed them to take my information, even though they said there has been no recalls, which they did. I am also considering filing a claim with them, depending on what the biopsy of BeBes intestines say, and what my vet thinks. I will keep you posted. What I have seen is a few people on blogs that have mentioned that their cats have also been getting sick. If anyone thinks that their cat might be getting ill from their food, it is important to call the manufacturer right away to let them know, and press them to take the information so they have a record. Right now, I don't plan on feeding my cats, or Chihuahua, Purina until my sister and I get the results from BeBes biopsy, and Frank's post mortem.

Disturbing!!! If you ever have any pet food issues please report them to the pet food company immediately and to the FDA at this address:

Edited to fix FDA url

ty for sharing this infor as for many, when their babies go to the vet for throwing up and diarrah, the vets are trying as hard as they can to find out why??

Thanks for posting that. As you know I lost two cats in the last month my diabetic and my other cat who just stopped eating for no apparent reason. The diabetic had pancreatitis, but the other one that got sick for no apparent reason had access to Purina EN. Also my third older cat has been sick as well since Thanksgiving.
They said it was his teeth but had the teeth pulled and he is still not acting right. My kitten also eats the Purina EN but I have not seen any ill effects with her.
When all my cats got sick at the same time I even had the gas company come and check for gas leaks inside the house as I could find no cause for all this. The diabetic cat did not have access to dry food, she only ate wet FF. but the others were all fed Purina.
Now I am starting to wonder.
Vicki if you hear any more about this could you please post it here?

Someone who posts on the Lev ISG has had both cats become ill within the past 2 weeks as well. I don't know which foods they eat, but when cats become mysteriously ill and vets can't figure out why I always get scared about it being something in the food.

I never considered the food. I thought maybe it was something inside my house. I could not understand why 3 cats became sick a matter of weeks. My diabetic I do understand but the other two? No way was this coincidence. Even the vets thought it was strange and and said if the third cat passes away we would have to send him to the health dept. to find out why. He has not passed yet but he is still questionable. I still have the bag of food that I was feeding when I had the other cats. I will hang on to it I guess.

What is Purina "EN" food? There was apparently a recall on Purina One Vibrant Maturity cat foods in July/Aug.

What I find most disturbing in the news article is that the food was shipped in Dec. 2010 and a recall wasn't issued until 8 months later?? I know it takes a while to get bought and used, but still, quite a few animals had probably been sickened by then. Something like that shouldn't take 8 months.

Purina EN is a prescription diet from the vet for stomach. I was just looking at Fancy Feast which is made by Purina, the Whicker Lickins treats I have which are made by Purina.
My vet even told me to go on the internet when all mine got sick to see if there was a recall on Fancy Feast. I never saw anyone here post they had any problems so I never thought anything about it.

How scary! We feed our civvie twix Purina One dry foods. She's never shown any symptoms as described above but I will definitely keep my eye on her. Anytime we make a switch to other foods, she develops rodent ulcers all over her lips. Thank you for posting this.

I used to feed my non diabetic kitties purina one, but about a month and a half ago I noticed they were all throwing up the dry food a lot.
So i took it away and switched them to different one. Since then they've stopped vomiting. Now I've switched them completely off dry food and they have no problems with throwing up at all.

I stopped today and picked up some Eukanuba, the older one seems to like it the little one won`t touch nor will she eat wet food. The older one will eat combination of Fancy Feast and a little dry. If I try to feed him wet food alone he just licks the juice off of it and will not actually eat the food.
