I am looking for some input.
I have been using the ReliOn Micro.
However I just read a review where the Mini was the only tester to receive a rating as excellent in both accuracy and consistency by consumer reports.
Also how prevalent are fake products for testers and strips on Ebay?

Thank you.

It's the only meter I have used and I like it except for the fact the test strips are expensive. Cheapest I have found is at Target...100 for $115.99. Thanks for posting the article and happy to know it's accurate. I also like the lancet device that is included with meter, it's easy to use and doesn't trouble Ollie's ear much. I have no other meter experience so not sure what my opinion may be worth.

I have three meters: The ReLion micro, the Bayer Contour and the One-touch Ultra mini...I find that all three are excellent meters, however, my onetouch has been moved to being a back-up meter because of the price of the strips. This was Maxwell's meter but since he has now been OTJ for over a year, I have moved him to the Relion because I can get a very small batch of strips very cheaply. Musette is a DCIN sponsored cat and they supply me with her Bayer Contour meter and the strips for it. However, while I love the meter if I was paying for the strips myself, she would be on a Relion Micro too. All three meters give reading very close to each other (within meter variances). All are easy to use, and all have excellent ratings it really at least for me comes down to the price of the strips, which the Relion wins hands down.

Honestly, I only used the relion micro. That was what my vet suggested, and mainly due to the lower cost on the strips.
The meters themselves, look they cost $9. Not sure how much the onetouch costs. If it's $20 bucks, is it going to be twice as accurate? Doubtful.

What I usually tell people is this... Buy a meter, and unless you see where it is obviously defective or the strips are repeatedly giving you errors, stick with what you have. I've seen a couple "cases" where people sit there and get all worked up over Meter A showing a 250 and meter B showing 300, and worrying which was "right". Answer. Neither and both. Those readings are within the magic "20%" FDA allowed variance. And they both show BG that is high enough to require insulin.

Most meters run between $10 and $20 I think. They all come with a possible variance range of 20%. I mean, you are getting what you pay for. How much "quality" are you getting from something that at best is going to be "in the ballpark"? As long at the battery life is good and the thing doesn't fall apart when you, oops, drop it on the floor (not that this ever happened to me  ), it is what it is. A tool to help people check their sugars. It's not a lab instrument.

But you have to pick one, and stick with it. Otherwise, you'll go insane and never trust the meter no matter how many you try or how much you spend. If you don't trust your meter, no matter the brand, you'll never trust the numbers and always second guess yourself.

I use the one touch ultra mini. I love it! Strips are kind of expensive, if you are in the states and can get them on amazon.com they are much cheaper, I"m in Canada and get them at the pharmacy for $83 for 100. But takes a very small amount of blood and the accuracy is very very good.

Test strips from amazon
50-70$ for 100

Yah yah. :)

Actually Walmart has a price rollback. $10.97

I use the one touch mini and I am very happy with it except for the cost of the strips. It is easy to use and I like the function that saves the readings so you can go back as far as you need to check older BG tests.

But I have nothing to compare it with since I have never used another meter.

I have both a OneTouch and and OneTouch mini, both of which I got for free for personal use. The drawback is the cost of strips. My insurance won't pay for them for me, and obviously not for my cat. At over $1/strip it's just too much out of pocket.

I like the idea that the unit tests twice for accuracy.
The strips are def pricy and I am already into my 3rd 50 count of ReliOn.

I used a Bayer meter with Boo and loved it. Through kitty sitting for several diabetic cats in Phoenix, I've managed to use just about every meter out there and I hated those Reli-On meters more than anything. I'm also not willing to step into Walmart to buy anything.

Get your strips on Ebay. The prices there are generally about half what you would pay in the store.

Thats what I was thinking.
However I have heard about knock offs.

Leo and I use the one touch mini, I also read the same men's health article. I've gotta say I'll take accuracy over anything. I had an accuchek and double tested both meters for a bit, the OT seems to be more accurate when I double and triple checked the same drop of blood, the accuchek was not near as accurate. The strips are pricy, but I figure it's worth it! If you're in the states I've heard you can get great deals on amazon, but unfortunately we don't have anything like that in Canada......that i can find.

Which specific Reli-on meter were you using? I use the Contour and have been very pleased after comparing it to a couple of other ones. The Reli-on Ultima, on the other hand, I wouldn't recommend to anyone. The same generic meter can be purchased directly from ArkRay who also makes the strips...

At the rate I am going through strips ebay may be the answer periodically.

I recently bought 200 strips off ebay for about C$80 (incl shipping.) That is the price for 100 at walmart.

They have been working perfectly well so far.

I've used the OT and/or OT mini for 6 1/2 years and yes the strips are expensive.....but so is the ER. Ebay is the best place to get them and so far I have not had a problem.

I recently got the Relion from Walmart just because of the price of the strips but in comparing the readings between the two there was waaaay too much difference to feel comfortable with. When Reagan goes low, which he does frequently, I want to know exactly where he is.

Great name for your cat.

Went to Walmart yesterday for strips for my ReliOn. I got the last box. Whats up with that??

I'm with Gail on the OT, not so much the mini though. I know when my OTU reads 30 it is 30 and time to give some treats and food. Also agree ER is a lot more expensive than the strips ;-)

Is it normal to get over 100 point differences in tests a couple minutes apart?
I have been double testing when I see something suspicious and am getting some wild differances. I had 1 last night the went was around 120 points different.

I have been using the OneTouch UltraMini today and yesterday. Did some double testing and its been 13 points or under in difference.
I also have a new ReliOn as I believe the first one was defective. I was getting differences of over 130 points.

One thing I will note is that the reliOn test strip seems easier to draw the blood in and seems to require less blood.
