? Any issues with Fancy Feast?

Hi there!

Has anyone had any trouble with Fancy Feast classics lately? A few days ago, Roo threw up all his food (Turkey and Giblets) in the middle of eating dinner, and I haven't seen him vomit like that before. He wouldn't go near the remaining food in the bowl or a new can of the same flavor that I opened. I had some FF Salmon Feast left that he happily went for, so was very relieved in the moment. I then got some 9Lives Meaty Pate to add in to the mix, but he doesn't seem to be liking it as much, and it doesn't seem to sustain him like FF does. I have given him some FF Turkey and Giblets since, with no problems, but after doing reading there seems to be a lot of people on the internet saying that recent batches (from the last 6-12 months) have been giving their cats serious problems and causing deaths (https://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/fancy-feast.html).

Just looking for advice on the food situation long term - should I try to find something new, or stick to FF as I haven't had problems since that one time? I'm quite new at this, and not sure if what I'm reading is reliable or not, so would love some input from more experienced people o_O

PS: for some context, I've had Roo for less than 2 months and have been trying to regular through diet. I am doing home testing, and am planning to take him to a new vet sometime in the next couple of weeks to discuss an insulin plan as my current vet is not very knowledgable or experienced.

I only give my cat Fancy Feast Classic Chicken Pate, have not had any problems. I just read the consumer report you posted, I just checked my cans and they say manufactured in St Louis, Missouri

No issues here either. Several of my other pets have been snitching the Fancy Feast too and everyone seems fine.
 
I recently needed to change from FF to low phosphorus (and low carb) canned foods because my old calico girl was dx with CKD. I was having no issues with it. In fact, they miss their FF!

Did you ever try phosphorus binders? I don't believe my kitty has CKD, but would like to be on the safe side for sure.

Tyler reminds me of my own sugar baby, Jack. They both have such sweet faces. I think orange tabbies are such sweethearts.

Poor baby, having to take pepcid AC and miralax every night, your cats are adorable, I think orange tabbies are sweethearts also. Tyler's brother has to take phenobarbital at 9 am and at 9 pm, then at 7 am, 3 pm and 11 pm he takes levetiracetam , and at 5 pm he takes cerenia , a pill for nausea. It never ends

do you still have the cans from the food that caused Roo distress? there should be some coding and numbers printed on the bottom of the can. My guess would be that was a bad batch, and it would be really helpful for the rest of us if you could retrieve the cans and post the numbers, letters, etc from them

also you could write Purina about the experience -- they need to know about a problem, they could recall, at the very least they ought to offer you some recompense

while the rest of us could check our supplies, retrieve any that match yours

I bought a variety pack at Walmart and haven't had any problems with any of the poultry or beef pates, I did let a pack of MeowMix Tender Favorites get a little old or a little warm, and Catcat the glutton, wouldn't touch it .. but it had sat overnight

Does he take all of those because of his kidney disease? Celie may eventually need to be on more meds, but she was just diagnosed in April and she's still in the early stages. I lost a cat last September to congestive heart failure, and he took five medications daily for that. But I believe they gave him 14 more months of a great quality of life. Without those meds, Michael wouldn't have made it through that last year.

Celie only had two doses of a phosphorus binder, and it took away her appetite and made her throw up. Her appetite came back as soon as I removed the pho binder, but I know I won't try again. A lot of people have problems with pho binders, and they frequently cause constipation. Although healthy cats don't require a massive amount of phosphorus if they're full grown, they still require a little bit of the mineral for optimum health. So you never want to use a phosphorus binder for any cats that don't have kidney disease. And even those who do have kidney disease, pho binders aren't needed unless their phosphorus levels are too high.

He takes the phenobarbital and the levetiracetam for his seizures, he hasn't had one in 9 months so far, the cerenia he takes because he started throwing up last month quite a bit, my vet told me that cats with kidney disease often get nauseous and throw up. He is in stage 2 kidney disease. He's had it for about 3 or 4 years. He goes for blood work every 6 months. His numbers aren't that bad thank God.
His blood work has been pretty good. So sorry about your cat that you lost last year. So far I have owned 5 cats and had to put 2 to sleep. I cried for days. I couldn't even imagine losing Tyler and Perry.

Unfortunately, I don't as I usually chuck the can right after putting the food down. I haven't had problems with the same case of food since, but I am taking a look at every can carefully now, and will let you all know if anything happens again. Fingers crossed it was just a one time freak thing

I didn't know any of this either, until my old sweet calico was dx with kidney disease. I will say that I've learned that giving an adult high phosphorus food isn't necessary, and giving them foods with a more reasonable amount may prevent future problems with kidney failure. But they do require some. Also, kittens need a lot more phosphorus than adults, and foods made for kittens will generally have higher phosphorus.

It's so painful to lose our fur babies. They become such a significant part of our lives. I lost Michael in Sept to heart disease, and Wally in Feb to nasal cancer. Within a week after losing Wally, Jack was dx with diabetes. Last month, my oldest was dx with early stage kidney failure. It's been tough.
