Any experience with Tresaderm and FD

When vet was prescribing it, she said it had steroids in it and I am wondering if anyone has had experience with using it on an FD kitty. I didn't ask a lot of questions because Smokey was uncomfortable before going in with her ears really bothered deep down inside to the point that she'd scratch a large spot bare and bloody on the top of her head. Once they started swabbing, and looking, and putting in meds the poor girl got downright pissed and my sole focus was to get her out home and comfortable as possible.

She's been diet controlled for over a year now. One of the problems is that I hate to even try to test her when both ears are bothered so bad and I don't know if I would be able to test her because she is constantly shaking her head and flicking her ears. Is 10 days of this worrisome enough to force the issue? Or should I leave it be until he ears are better and then just test a bit more frequently after we have her ears feeling better.

No real source of the problem shown so if anyone has ideas of why a kitty's ears would all of a sudden getting itchy and inflamed (both ears at once!) I'd love to hear ideas. Ifeel so bad cause she cries and walks around with her ears flat and I can't make it better for her :sad:
 
Houdini had ear problems several months ago due to several weeks on antibiotics. Dr said it was yeast mainly so I used an earwash concoction he told me about - equal portions of peroxide and white vinegar. You can add a tiny bit of alcohol if the ears are not inflamed. Squirt in down in there and squish it around. It seemed to help a lot but we couldn't quite get rid of it so we used the Tresaderm for a week. It did increase his bg's after a day or two but not a lot. I heard from others that they got a big jump in numbers though.
 
I used in on my Twigie. It skyrocketed her BGs to almost 500.

Did the vet take a swab of the ears and place it on a slide and stain it and look at it under a microscope?
 
Yes, they swabbed both ears and looked at it on a slide. Twice actually - the tech swabbed and then the doc swabbed again. No mites, no yeast, some bacteria - but generally there types of bacteria. Nothing obvious to cause itching. Down in the ears are definitely showing inflamation, though not serious at this point. She says maybe we just caught an ear infection early because its bothering her more than normal, but whatever it is we need to get the inflamation down to get her comfortable again.

I couldn't imagine putting peroxide and vinegar in her ears at this point :shock: I can't tell for sure if it is itching or burning, but I can tell that the medicine going in aggravates it a lot so peroxide would be pretty unbearable for her I think.

Sounds like I need to test when she's able to tolerate the ear pokes to keep an eye on things. Thanks for the info there. My vet knows how I feel about steroids on Smokey so I am believing this this must be the best route to get her comfortable again as quickly as possible.
 
The only thing that bothered 'Dini was the bubbling of the peroxide which only lasted for a few minutes...after that his ears felt better. Something in that solution was soothing.....strange as it seems. He didn't have any scabs or sore spots though.

You might try the Trresaderm and see what it does to the BG's. It seemed to work pretty fast and just getting the inflammation down would be more comfortable.
 
Got a reading this morning about 2.5 hours after the 3rd dose -> 96 :-D I can already tell the ears are a little bit better. The meds still bother her something fierce, but she's back to holding her ears up straight most of the time and playing with the kittens in the toys the vets office gave us yesterday. Such a good girl.
 
138 today :YMSIGH: Not too bad yet, but not the trend I want to see. She was not a high number kitty for long and I think that is actually the highest number I've seen since I started hometesting. The good thing is the ears are much better and she only seems really bothered when we put the meds in. Maybe we can get off the stuff early if the BGs continue to climb. Will probably check again tonite and increase the frequency of checks if it keeps trending up. The bad thing is I don't have a lot of strips on hand, since I wasn't testing that often I was putting off reordering.
 
Thanks Larry. I will test and watch until we are off of it for a few days. We started on Monday and doc prescribed 10 days so next wed would be the last day on it. She came back down to 116 last night, held at 117 this morning before the meds, and actually pulled herself down to a beautiful 81 this afternoon :mrgreen:

The meds are doing wonders for her ears. There is only a bit of irritation now when the meds first go in. She has her ears back up straight within a few minutes and now more head shakes or scratching cat_pet_icon
 
Gave her a break after the 81, poor ears aren't used to this much pokin'. Yesterday went to 130s again. Today 211 :sad: Will test again tonite and tomorrow AM and if we are still high talk to the vet about stopping at 7 days.

220 tonite. :YMSIGH: skipping evening dose of ear meds and talkng to vet first thing in the morning. Damn. I was hoping we could sneak by a short run of steroids.

Sorry I'm late to this post....been offline for a week.

Porky has a chronic ear infection problem, so he's been on Tresaderm for months (2 times a week). It's the only thing I found that works - we tried many different things.

So far his BGs are o.k. - he's OTJ, and his monthly pokes show him to be around 79 or so. Even with his higher carb hypo-allergenic food, too!

That's my perfect Porkchop (fingers still crossed, though!)
 
Wow Jennifer, I am impressed with your Porky! Its good to know that I may not have to be soo paranoid about steroids for her when its the best treatment option for something.

Our Tresaderm has been terminated. It did the wonders on the ears quickly, we were 1 dose short of 7 days, which seems a more normal dose than the 10 prescribed, so not worth pushing the BGs anymore IMO.

My vet is out until Thurs and her partner said "200s really isn't that bad for a cat" ohmygod_smile Sweet woman, but one of the things that drove me nuts with treating Smokey is the two vets would give us totally different answers when it came to FD. My vet still had us shooting 3 units in the 80s and she thinks 200s is great.


Down to 127 this morning and her coat is looking muck cleaner and fluffier. Knock another 40 off of that number and I will be one relieved momma.
