Went to pick up a prescription at the vet's for a deworming/anti-parasite treatment. I expected a pill, but he had left Profender, by Bayer, a topical.

I came home and looked it up on Google and got scared. This is just in case Kitty has parasites or worms; we're not sure what's causing his symptoms (losing weight, throwing up every three or so days).

Has anyone used this drug?

I have not used it personally but I did know someone who used in for some of her barn cats and it it seems to work with no side effects.

Just asked the same question over on face book. Had to take Walker, one of our civies, up to the vet today cause he puked round worms today. he had already had the oral dewormer twice. So the vet suggested this. I applied it, so far no side effects, though it's only been a few hours.

Thank you both. Marjorie, if he seems "off" in any way, would you post again?

There were some nasty stories on a site dedicated to bashing Hartz products, and this is a Bayer product. Kitty didn't react great to the topical flea meds, so now I'm nervous.

Hi Kathy,
Just thought I'd pop over, Walker is doing very good & has had no adverse side effects. The only thing is his poop is smeller than normal, but to my understanding thats because he's shedding the worms. All in all I'd give this product a thumbs up :thumbup

Know what you mean, I've heard the horror stories about hartz products, I'd never use those.

What timing! I finally gave Kitty the Profender this morning, because I was able to be home with him. He is doing pretty well overall -- slept deeply for hours and hours, only ate once, but now he's up and about and seems fine.

The vet gave us the dose for large cats, 12-21 pounds; I was so worried I deliberately left a couple of drops out when I put it on. Just didn't want to take too many risks.

I guess it will be a good sign if his poop is smelly -- that wil mean he did have worms, and he needed the treatment!

I'm so glad to hear Walker is doing well. Kitty says to thank him for sharing his experience! :-D
