Another visit from the House Call Vet

So today Robbie had another visit from the house call vet - It's been too long since he really did a proper poop (probably 10 days with only 3 good eliminaitons in that entire time( . Our vet was closed Wed and Thursday - when I called Friday they were jammed up but he called back and suggested I see if the house call vet who came before would come by over the weekend if there was no improvement (Robbie has not been on the Cisapride that long) - Robbie is FAR less stressed out at home for the enema and his litter box is right here so no chance of car messes as well - after the last horrific experience with the enema at the Vet we decided it would be good to catch him before he was really THAT backed up - so I arranged for her to come today and she examined him and said it wasn't "too bad" so with a much more gentle enema (just a little warm soapy water and some lube) she cleaned him out - we were both shocked to say the least at what came out (more than either of us expected but all soft so something is working and it's clear this is NOT a drying up problem) - but NOW the cisapride has a much better chance to work - so we will continue with that and are upping his miralax to 1/4 teaspoon bid (and the lactulose 3ml bid if he doesn't start pooping at least every other day, a legit amount this week). He's been going a bit every day just not much - she feels his cisapride should be increased too but didn't want to have me do that without speaking to our regular vet which I will do tomorrow.
Again I am way behind in his SS - was going to get to that this weekend but I ended up in the ER for 6 hours yesterday with a miserable asthma attack - told the vet my current joke (for people who know Robbie has diabetes, asthma and mega colon) - "I've got diabetes too, asthma too but if I get mega colon I'm tossing in the towel LOL" Anyway - I'm on meds now which should make things all OK (asthma has been pretty much non- existent for years and years until last summer) but it was a loooong weekend. His numbers have been so/so - still mostly low to mid 200's except for amps and pmps when it's generally mid to high 300's - this morning he was SO vocal and upset at 4am I gave him a full can with miralax in it - I was so asleep I didn't test him. At 5:15 when I gave him his shot I tested and he was 415 - but he had JUST eaten a full can so ... At any rate - after the emptying out today he was playing and using his scratcher and messing with the dog - than he spent the evening on the couch next to me (which he hasn't done in ages) so I know he was feeling good. I was busy most of the night but just tested him now at pmps +6 and he's 237 - not thrilled at that but it was a stressful day for him even if he was feeling relieved.
We go in some time after the 15th for the fructosamine test at the Vets - my guess is we'll be moving to 5.5 BID or maybe 6 but probably 5.5. I will get the SS updated before than so its easier for any of you so inclined to give us some input. Thank you as always!

I'm sorry to hear about your trip to the ER, Ellen, and hope you are feeling better. It sounds like Robbie has perked right up. Paws crossed that the combination of all the new meds will work for him.

Hi Ellen -

I think you've got a gem in that "house call vet" - sounds like she's worth her weight in gold - or poop - which ever you measure by! Sorry to hear he continues to have challenges - and I remember you said w/ all the tourists, it's a pain to take him to the regular vet. What a life-saver those house calls are! Hope you're BOTH feeling better soon!

So sorry to hear more problems with Robbie. Hope the Cispirimide starts to work soon. I think increasing the miralax will help too. I did copper 1/4tsp 2xday at first too. Good luck with the new meds and hope robbie feels so much better soon!

Well, KNOCK ON WOOD we have had a real poop every day now since Sunday (Monday and tuesday) and even TWO today - first ones that look like his "old self" (good lord did I ever think I'd miss those almost human size poops? Did I ever think I'd be this focused on cat poop?) The cisapride seems to be working - I'm mixing it in his food most of the time and he's eating it all, mostly. I've increased the miralax too and he's doing OK for the first time but it's only been 2 days so fingers crossed.

POOP = GOOD !!! :-D
Glad things are “moving” for you guys. Take care of YOU too Ellen. So many of us with asthma have been feeling it with this extreme hot muggy weather.
Good healing (and poop) vibes comin’ your way :-D

Big sigh from Robbie, who is thinking "I'm just so happy I could sh*t"

So how YOU doin, Ellen?

Carl

Hello, Ellen

Never ever thought I'd be interested in another cat's poop  but I have been following Robbie's closely @-) since my two girls have had dryish poo issues. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but, after some 3 - 4 months on Miralax, as well as, faithful adherence to daily doses of white petroleum jelly, neither of them has had any dryish poos. This process seems to have taken forever! Though, their issue seems to have always been connected to swallowing hair which tangled around the poo and, I'm guessing, slowed the elimination process down! Hope you'll keep posting, Ellen, so we can all learn. Wishing good health to you and Robbie, Sophie

So glad to hear he is doing better and daily pooping ok. The miralax and raw food has done wonders for Copper. The raw food actually makes the poop not so big and doesn't stink at all. We half n half the raw and fancy feast and it makes it just right. Praying that Robbie continues to stay "healthy".

Thanks gang well no poop today but I'm thinking mixing the cisapride in with his food is not as effective - so back to at least once a day squirting it down his throat - I think his dad forgot to put his miralax in the breakfast this morning - but he doesn't remember. So I doubled up in his night time snack - figure it won't be an issue. His problem is not dry poop (although when it's been way too long.. it's bound to be somewhat dry) - he hasn't had an issue with hair balls since he got off of dry food (nothing really bad) - I'm hoping we'll find the right "mix" .
I'm doing OK - not as well as I'd like after 4 days on prednisone pills (yuck) but we'll see about that too - weather, allergies, stress all not working in my favor but seeing Robbie feeling better is bound to help. He got some under 175 numbers now that he's pooping regularly and seems to feel better - so we're hanging in there. Still want to update the SS - after this weekend (big event for my job - sold out 1200 tickets to a food and wine event we put on) I think I'll have some time.

Ellen,
Does the pred make you feel spacey and wired at the same time? I had to take it years back for a couple of weeks, and it messed me all up. I felt stoned and speedy at the same time. Not a good feeling.
