Joey was diagnosed with Diabetes 2 weeks ago. He is now at 1.25 U of insulin twice daily, but his BG's are constantly in the mid to high 300s when I test him. I give him his shots faithfully at 6 am & 6 pm.

I BG test him before his meal and shot, and same when I come hme from work. I also test him before I go to bed, making sure he hasnt eaten for 2 hours before the BG reading.

He is off all dry food as of last week, and right now eating all low carb Fancy Feasts. He is ALWAYS starving. I feed him two 3 OZ cans in the morning after his BG, leave one can out when I go to work, another can at 6 PM and one more at 10 PM.
I'm wondering if I'm giving him too much food?

Any suggestions on a feeding/dosing schedule? I appreciate it! I work Mon-Fri 9-5. Thanks

How much does Joey weigh, and about how much should he weigh? If he's unregulated and underweight then you should feed him however much he wants. Fancy feast isn't very high in calories, so sometimes it takes few cans to get though the day for a larger cat.

What kind of insulin is he on?

With that kind of weight loss I wouldn't reduce his food. Was he too heavy at 12 lbs or was that a normal weight for him? If 12 lbs was normal my guess is that you'll be able to cut the food down to 2 1/2-3 cans FF a day, but not until he's regulated.

I see you raised his dose 1.25u, which is good. You should raise again to 1.5u if you're seeing the numbers. Any way you can get some +6s? He might need a .5u increase instead of a .25u, but without seeing those nadirs it's hard to tell.

Have you been posting in the Lantus forum? There are some wonderful people there that can give you advice with testing and dosing. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=9

The first time I did a curve for Cedric, I stayed home. The 2nd time, I took him into the office for 1/2 the day then went home (I had ADT scheduled to come to the house). The last time I did a curve on him (testing every 2 hours) he came into the office with me. If that is a possiblity for you, give it a try. Cedric was also on Lantus, but I switched him away from the FF to Wellness and EVO (I also bought Blue Buffalo Wilderness in can & dry, but now that I use 5.5 oz cans, he doesn't get that - they don't seem to come in that size). I took away the dry and his numbers dropped again. My cat was 17.6 LBs at his check up on 4/21/11. I think he has lost a little bit of weight, but not alot. I think the vet would like him to lose 3 lbs. We just moved into a townhouse the week before he was diagnosed, and I think that is helping.

I do like you and give him 4 small meals a day. I feed him at 6am, then put out a canned food popcicle before I leave at 7:30 (I freexe 1/4 of the can the night before in a sealed container), then I feed him when I get home, and again between 8and 9pm. On the weekends I vary a bit depending on my work schedule at my p/t job.
