Annie has blood in urine....

I noticed Annie wasn't herself today. Last night she peed outside the litterbox - which she hasn't done since before being diagnosed with Diabetes. This morning she was sleeping in a place she never sleeps.. and i noticed wet spots on the floor, but i also saw a hairball, so i figured it was from my other cat because she always throws up bile right before the hairball comes. Then i was watching her and she was laying down and lifting her back leg funny, then she was licking herself. then she peed on the bed... then she ran to the litter box and tried to pee but couldn't. I watched her and i noticed some other urine spots around the cat room, when cleaning them i noticed there was spots of blood. :sad: took her to the vet right away, they did a urinalysis that confirmed no blockage, and blood in urine, also protein in urine. They also need another urine sample from us to get at home to bring back for a more complete testing. He said it's either just bladder infection, or something to do with the kidneys. He also suggested xrays and ultrasound but honestly.... i cannot afford it at all this week

Is there anything i can do at home here to help heal her discomfort?
 
Unfortunately I think the tests are necessary to learn just which type of antibiotics Annie needs to clear up the infection. This will bump up your thread for more eyes,

Its just tought right now cuz we don't have the $300 they need! but also, is there anything i can do for her at home until she gets what she needs?

I feel so bad for her. last night she was crying and crying and i don't know if it was from the UTI or something else
 
If you have had a bladder infection, you know how painful they can be and nothing much helps except medicine. Have you asked your vet if you could do the UTI test first? If you bring in a sample, that could be an easier fix. Will he accept a payment plan?
 
we are going to get her antibiotics but she is peeing out big jelly-like things with blood. :sad:
we can't afford x-rays right now so that's gonna have to wait.
 
back from vets, they prescribed her Clavamox 1 tablet 2xday for now, just to get her started on antibiotics until her lab results come back.

we are trying to collect a urine sample at home to take in, saves money on having them keep her overnight and do it. Also, no, they don't accept payment plans, It's all straight up, that's the tough part.

She doesn't seem to be peeing AS much around the house tonight... just found a few little puddles. I feel so helpless! but we have started her on the antibiotics already, and we will take in the urine sample tomorrow.
 
I will. Still can't catch a pee sample unfortunately but we are trying. We were hoping to get one this morning so we can take it in to the vet asap.

she seems ok otherwise though... she's alert and active.
 
Sorry this may be too late , but could help if it happens again. Unfortunately, urine testing after starting the ABs won't tell much, so you could save the money. Once you start abs without the test it will be impossible to determine what the bacteria was or even if it was there. Also free catch of urine at home isn't good because there are too many way it can become contaminated. Even just from her fur. Also crystals can form in the urine in just half an hour outside the body, so there is a great possibility of a false positive for that. Tess is prone to UTIs and we learned all this after the ER gave Clavamox w/out a test (bladder was empty). Clavamox has worked for her , but it does depend on the type of bacteria.

In the future you need the vet to do a cystocentesis (get a sample of urine from the bladder w/ a needle). Most vets can check in house to see if there is bacteria in the urine, but they can't determine what strain of bacteria it is. If there is bacteria present they need to send it out for C&S (Culture and Sensitivity) to see what type of bacteria so they can prescribe the right ABs. The C&S can take several days and our vet starts Tess on an AB but may change it once the results are in. The C&S is also the expensive part and your vet can tell right away if there is bacteria present. If not they can save you money by not sending the rest of the sample out for more testing.

Two things were recommended for Tess, Cosequin and a good live culture probiotic. The cosequin can strengthen and sooth the bladder lining. The probiotic keeps a strong colony of good bacteria in the colon. If any bad bacteria survive the digestive process, with the way cats groom it can get spread to the urethra and travel up and infect the bladder. (W/ sugar cats the glucose in the urine makes them more susceptible.) Healthy good bacteria in the colon control the bad bacteria. go to a Health food store and ask about a live culture, pet specific probiotic. It needs be refrigerated. Probiotics also help w/ the runny stools that abs can cause.

One last thing, Tess was always OK w/ the Clavamox liquid, but this last time they gave us the pills and after a few days she started vomiting and refusing to eat. I later learned that some people have that kind of reaction to the binders used in making the pills, so it wasn't the Clavamox itself, but the process used i making the pills.

The vet took a urine sample at the vets when we first took her in, but that only checked for Ketones, Protiens, blood, etc.

We couldn't afford at the time to keep her in there overnight so that's why we did it at home... he gave us sterile containers to use. She was on the Clavamox only 1 1/2 days before i got the pee sample. We were aware that it could affect the results but i wanted her on antibiotics right away because i was worried, and she was crying alot and hiding etc. So we are waiting for results right now from the Culture.

she seems better though.... she isn't peeing all over like the day we took her in. It was weird, when she peed out that jelly-like thing(they said could have been puss), she stopped peeing all over the place and seems normal now???? hmmmm weird. BUT her bg numbers have been coming down considerably, especially today.
 
I'm glad she is doing better! Clavamox often is the AB that is needed. The time we didn't get the test at the ER and they gave Tess Clavamox, she was much better by the next morning and had stopped the leaking all over too. (She had actually peed a little in my lap while we were getting ready to take her to the ER!) I know on wanting to help her right away, just , if it happens again, get them to check for bacteria and save a sample for C&S right away. You'll get more valid results and maybe save money on the extra test.

When you get an infection under control and the cat is no longer in pain, BGs can come down dramatically!
 
Yea, yesterday and today especially they have dropped drastically.

but i am taking her in for a general check up monday. I'm just glad she's feeling better, i kinda freaked out a bit because she's never peed blood before and i know it can be serious. And because we took her to the vet during emergency hours, the prices were doubled, and we couldn't afford to keep her there overnight.
