I have not posted on here for a long time but have been thinking of everyone and have meant to check in. My boyfriend moved in last year and we've had a lot of issues due to my ADD but things are working out. Anyway, Angel had been doing great and I hadn't tested him for a while. Last Thursday he went for a dental and the pre op bloodwork showed glucose levels of 13/209. (UK/US). I decided to test him but my strips were 4 months out of date. I bought a couple from the vets but they were 2 YEARS out of date. (they are refunding me). The vet said to try my out of date strips and they will have new ones by Thurs. I have an alphatrak 2. this evening I got my nerve up, dreading the results. I did a control solution test and got 7 UK. I tested Angel and got a reading of 17.2/276. He's had no symptoms, the only time I've seen him drinking extra is since he came back from the vets on Thurs.
I hate to think he may have to go back on insulin, he's such a sweet cat and doesn't deserve it. I've done everything right, all 4 are on a diet of less than 10% carbs (Bozita, Butchers really meaty and ZiwiPeak). I'm thinking I'll leave a note for my boyfriend and tell him not to feed Angel until I get up, then I can get a more accurate reading. I feel sick now, poor Angel, I feel like I've let him down in some way. Just hoping against the odds that it was a false reading.

If he just had the dental last week, it's possible that there's still some pain/inflammation and he just needs a little more time to fully heal

There's no reason to blame yourself.....genetics are just as big a cause (if not more) than diet, so despite feeding a good low carb diet, it may just genetics. There's no fighting that.

You're doing the right thing by keeping him on a good low carb diet....that could be the difference between a level in the 200's and a level in the 500's!!

Hi Cassandra
I feel your anxiety over this but try not to worry for the moment... see what happens when you can get an accurate reading and go from there. There could be other issues at play too like getting over the dental so don't beat yourself up... it may be fine. You certainly haven't let Angel dowin in any way.

Positive thinking!

thank you so much both of you. Another high reading this morning. :arghh: I'll call the vets first thing tomorrow and see what she suggests. I've missed everyone so much but I was spending so much time here and getting so involved, I needed a break. I just didn't mean for it to be so long, or to have another reason to come back other than missing my friends on here. My partner and I both noticed that a few days before the dental Angel was eating and drinking more but I put the increased thirst down to the fact I'd just started giving them ziwipeak air dried along with the wet food. Aaargh.
