Anemia caused by fleas

I'm really worried about Dottie. She has been fine all week, yesterday she seemed lethargic. I took her to the vet and her red blood cell count was low at 19, should be over 24. She isn't that interested in food tonight, she is just laying in her little box. She also has a minor infection from the scratching. On Clavamox for that. I hate seeing her just curled up her box. I was supposed to go out of town tomorrow night, but I don't know if I should. I don't know how quickly she will feel better. Vet treated her with Capstar to get rid of the adult fleas. She just got her second treatment of Frontline yesterday, seems like after that she didn't feel well. I don't know. I'm thinking her stomach might be upset from licking fleas, she does have a sensitive tummy. No vomiting yet. I've just had a lot of horrible things happen quickly with my cats, so I'm freaking out a bit. Anyone, dealt with Flea anemia or anemia in general?

Oh my gosh poor kitty! I dont have any experience to share but this will bump up your post for more eyes...Sending prayers for your baby.

Hey Sandy. Sending feel all better soon vines to Dottie, and gentle it will be okay hugs to you.

Fleas have been bad for us this summer. I treat the cats with Advantage, which seems to work well for them. I've always used Frontline Plus on the dogs since they get out and about. We have ticks where we go walking and Frontline will kill those too. Or at any rate, is supposed to kill them too. This summer Frontline doesn't even slow down the fleas. We were treating the dogs every couple of weeks. I hate to treat so often but our vet always assures us it is ok. Anyway, we finally switched the dogs to Advantage too. A couple of days after treatment, most of the fleas were gone. The fleas that I comb out of their fur are sluggish and easy to kill.

I put Frontline on her last month, it didn't to do much. However, after doing the second dose and then vet giving her the Capstar the fleas are all gone from her. I've been cleaning like a mad lady. I sprayed all my carpets and furniture with Knockout, I haven't seen a live flea in 2 days. Dottie was a lot better today, not a 100% yet. She is eating, but no poo in 2 days. I gave her a 1/4 tsp of Miralax, hopefully we will have something soon! I'm so glad I took her to the vet on Friday, this could have been really bad. I decided not to go out of town, I just didn't feel comfortable leaving her alone all night.

The Capstar kills all fleas in 30 minutes but it is not a long-lasting flea control product.

Neither Frontline nor Advantage are flea repellants. They are supposed to kill fleas within 24 hours. During that 24 hours, the fleas can bite although neither product should allow an infestation of fleas. Also, we are constantly bringing fleas in from the outside on our clothing so there will always be some fleas coming into the house. Your other animals will be bringing fleas inside too since those fleas have up to 24 hours before they meet their doom.

I have a cat that is severely flea allergic. Flea allergies are actually to flea saliva. Advantage stopped working. Frontline would not work. Someone finally recommended that I give Capstar every other day. That has worked. My cat is flea free finally. Capstar is not cheap. I buy in a quantity of 60 for $200.

Hopefully the Advantage will work. Advantage always did better than Frontline on my animals. You have a lot of animals to protect from fleas -- it can't be cheap!

Good luck --

Lana
