First blue pre-shot in ages. I shot as usual. Did I do the right thing? During the prior stint on Lantus months ago, I shot at much lower numbers, but I didn't know then that I should be concerned.

I thought about waiting to recheck that she was rising, but then I would have missed the normal shot time, and I didn't want to mess up what could be finally working. I also will never know if she's recently eaten because she free feeds. Could someone please remind me where the instructions are for shooting low numbers?

I tested again before going to work (+0.75) and she was 287. Anyone have thoughts on what that means? Is one of the values off? Or is this what we've been seeing all along -- once she starts to climb, she climbs fast; only this time she held it low longer?

That makes sense. Did she eat after the shot? That could mean she is a food spiker.

She ate right before the shot -- and continued grazing afterwards. I always make sure she'll eat something before shooting (low carb Fancy Feast). Oh, she also gets Paroxetine in a Pill Pocket at morning shot time. I assume they're high carb. Is one of them enough to explain it? She's also been getting one in the evenings now that she's on Baytril.
 
How big is the pill? I use a half pill pocket for Beau's morning meds (in the evening, I pill him because he gets two meds, 1/4 tabs, instead of one). I don't think that they are high enough in carbs to make that much difference unless she is REALLY sensitive to carbs.

She might have been on an upswing already, so the food only helped the rise. But at lease you have data that she rises from eating and can shoot the lower number safely.

The pill is tiny. I use about 3/4 of a Pill Pocket (the rest going to coat a pill for another cat that won't willingly eat one). Any less and I've found that she eventually figures things out.

The Baytril is much harder because it's huge. But I've been able to get by with cutting the pill and putting each half into half of a capsule and wrapping the package in half a pill pocket. Then, even when she bites into it, she doesn't taste the pill.
 
Baytrils are "taste tabs" meaning they are flavored, if it's brown that is. Smell it, I think it's beef or chicken or something "meaty" smelling. Some cats might eat it plain or in food.

I just don't like Pill Pockets. They are full of grains, look at the ingredient list. It's not hard to pill most cats. Have your vet show you how. Luckily I only have trouble pilling Leahpold and she is the kind who will gobble a pill up if I put it in food.
