Hey all,
Casanova has had a bout of diarrhea and the vet prescribed Tylan which is a powder antibiotic that you sprinkle on the food. He absolutely refused to eat it. Called back today and she prescribed Amoxicillin. Went to pick it up from my pharmacy and it is bubble gum flavored. I read the insert and it said not to take it if you have diabetes because it contains sugar. Does Amoxicillin come unflavored? Can't believe my vet would have prescribed this. Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure I have taken it without the bubblegum flavor. I'm thinking the pharmacy may have made the mistake, rather than the vet.

Did you get the human drug? It contains sucrose. The vet product, Amoxi-Drops may not contain sugar.
What was the exact wording of the warning. I did find:
Diabetes patients - Amoxicillin Drops may cause the results of some tests for urine glucose to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.

I myself would not realy be concerned about the amount of sugar in the drops.

sounds like you got this at a human pharmacy and they thought your cat was a child - hence bubblegum flavor -

I suggest calling the pharmacy and telling them this is for a cat and do they have this in a different flavor or unflavored? Maybe even in pill form, if you can pill your cat - you can hide it in pill pockets, deli meat, cheese, etc.

The pharmacist did know it was for a cat. I called the vet this morning and she said the only thing it does to diabetics is show a false positive for glucose in the urine. No worries. I'm going to monitor him just to be on the safe side. Don't want this to throw him off of his good numbers.

Thanks!!
