Hang in there and hang in here.

One of the FD 'gurus' from back in our day (FDMB class of 2008-2009) used to say tanks always get to where they want to go. 'Be the tank'.

How did you find out Amethyst was diabetic?

Hi Amethyst was scheduled for eye surgery to save her sight back on Dec 8,2106. She had preop blood work that is how I found out I am kicking myself to this day because she had signs of it that I really did not pay attention to before the blood work was done. She must have had diabetes for a formwhile before Dec, 2016!!!

I am not a lantus "guru" but I can see on your SS that she is staying high and flat. The pink numbers you're getting are better but still within the 20% variance allowed with the meter. So yesterday looked better but really was just a flat cycle. I think you're starting to see the preshots going down a little bit.
I hope you'll find her dose soon. Chuck is a high dose kitty too. He's getting 17 units twice a day. I know the frustration of not seeing much change. Hang in there! You're doing great.
I also didn't figure out Chuck was diabetic until he was very sick and skinny. Looking back, I think he was diabetic for 3 months before I caught on that there was a serious issue. BUT what matters is that we did catch it and are doing our very best to care for them and make them better today!

Hi Pam, Amethyst is one of the kitties I always look for on the site. I know how you feel too. I was hard to see Marvin wasn't improving much when I got to dose higher than a lot of kitties. Stay positive and remember, every cat is different and you will reach an insulin number that will safely take Amethyst where she needs to be. Have you started researching high dose conditions?

it's coming.... it really will.....

Did she have the eye surgery?

If you are able tonite, I'd get a +3 and then something like a +9 or 10 if at all possible....

Hi yes and I asked our MOBILE VET who just did some blood work on Amethyst and she told me she felt Amethyst was okay??

Hi I just read your reply I will try to get a +3 tonight. She had eye surgery on May 22,2017 to save her sight. She has GLAUCOMA and DRY EYE they cause ulcers and she had a sequestrum removed before it burst and would have caused blindness

HI YES I am worried but her MOBILE VET who just did some blood work on Amethyst was not worried??

Most vets are not familiar unfortunately about high dose conditions.

My Vet had been told it was rare and it wasn't covered in their training, she was happy to read up on it, and was surprise that 25% of diabetic cats have it, and can display little of no symptoms. It is worth asking the Vet to look into the latest research on acromegaly and IAA for cats. keep in mind, the test would only confirm if Amethyst has one of those 2 high dose conditions. treatment options are pricey, so a lot of people decide to treat the symptoms, and simply continue to try and find the right dose for their cat.

OKAY Thanks I will leave her a message. Who does the tests and how much?? I have no money was wondering if DCIN would pay for them??

The blood is drawn by your vet and sent to Michigan State University for the testing. DCIN has paid for tests in the past. We usually wait until kitty gets to 6.0'units before suggesting testing, but with Amethyst's high numbers at 5.0 units, you could get testing now, or at least start the conversation with DCIN.

You could have increased to 5.5 units today, keep fast tracking until you see yellow.

Lantus is an acid base, which will cause a sting for some cats, more so at higher doses. We find that Levemir seems to be better for high dose cats. If a kitty has IAA, the change in insulin can confuse the antibodies and get some better numbers.

It is ECID, but many cats are flatter on Lev. Neko was. I didn't switch until she was on smaller doses, but when I had to go up to larger doses the second time, I could tell she tolerated Lev much better than she had the larger doses of Lantus. Wish I has switched earlier.

ECID, each cat is different. There is no guarantee the switch would help, but many have benefitted from it. You have given Lantus a good run. How much Lantus do you have left?
