Alternative to Methyl B-12?

Tis the Season FDMB friends.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been trying to give Baxter Methyl B-12. I ordered it from Vitacost. I made sure it didn't have sugar alchol in it. I even call the company.

Baxter walks with both of his back feet out. Kind of like a penguin. Has a hard down going down a short step. I know he gets tired & needs to rest when he walks. It breaks my heart to see him like this. At times I take him his food while he is on his bed so he does'nt have to stand to eat. I know I could be starting a bad habit.

I first started empting the capsle into his food. The first evening I found out that it won't work. He threw up with in 30 minutes. So I started adding a little each time to feedings. It seemed to work, but it is such a very small amount & he wasn't eating as much food. He has lost a little weight because he won't eat as much. As I tried to put more B-12 in his food he would throw up. His stomach would make horrible, loud gurggles. I have now stopped adding it to his food. Since I have stopped he is back to eating 3.5 oz each feeding.

Is there another alternative to using Methyl B-12 to help with Neuoprathy?
Would giving Fish oil, pure Salmon oil etc. give the same benefit?

Speak with your vet about doing an injection of the methyl-B12, or even B vitamin complex, since the B vitamins work together.
 
I have thought about shots. I read that the effects of the shots wear off & don't last but a couple of days.
Do you know if this is true? Would I have to take him a couple of times a week to the vet?

If you and your vet were up for it, you could be shown how to do intramuscular shots, if that was the way it was given. A couple of folks on the board have learned how to do them and may be able to provide tips.

You already know how to do subcutaneous injections because you know how to do insulin shots.
 
Thats a good idea! I didn't think about that. (Oh great more shots....lol.) I will do anything to get Baxter better. If its more shots then BRING IT. My fear of needles flew out the window Nov 12.
My vet is currently out of town. When he returns I will speak to him about it.

HI Jenn, B12 shots are done subq. My cat gets a B12 shot every other week because she is anemic (she has CRF along with FD). As long as she is getting a treat she doesn't pay any attention. Jan
 
We give our kitty Zobaline, a form of methyl B-12, and it was a struggle to get him to take it until we discovered the duck and pea pill pockets, which are okay for diabetics. Zener also has cerebellar hypoplasia so his walking has always been a bit different. His strength has improved on the Zobaline, though we suspect staying in better numbers has had the most effect on his walking. Here is where we have ordered it:

I gave shakespeare B12 injections and they only lasted a few days
I still give him 5 pills a day as he was unable to walk for a long time without them
What I do is boil some chicken tenderloins and wrap up the pill in some chicken and it goes down
in one or 2 tries...It also workd great when you try this right after the chicken is cooked as
it kinda melts fron the heat of the chicken and it goes right down
 
The vet used to give my Lilly B-12 shots, they were a little expensive about 25.00 each. That was before I found this board. Had I know what I know now I would have asked for the B-12 and given her the shots myself if they would have given me a prescription for it.

Tell your vet you want a bottle of B12 (pink color) to give the shots at home. The shots have made a huge difference in my 2 cats. Also cleared up Shadoe's pancreatitis frequent flares, so I expect you will see many benefits from giving the shots at home.
 
I spoke with the vet today about admin Methyl B12 shots at home. He wants to see Baxter & do some blood work to check his vitamins. He said it would be a possibility for me to give him shots at home. So more waiting...will keep you updated.
