I'm so relieved I came across this page. I'm such a book nerd and knowledge nerd, so with this new diagnosis I've been non stop studying and panicking and learning and trying to stay calm all in the same day. Lol Without ever meeting anyone here I already trust your advice more than our vet. He doesn't seem to know what he's doing nor does he seem to care.

Everything that's being said to me here so far I feel so comfortable with. I'm switching angels free feed food to Evo tomorrow and will purchase a human glucose machine at Walmart so I can start testing before each AM and PM shot. Any suggestions to which one?

I brought her insulin back down to 2 units tonight. How long should I give 2 units a chance to work before I freak out and feel she needs an increase?

We would have to see the data on her Spreadsheet, once you start home testing, to see her patterns on the dose. A lot of us probably found this place because we're knowledge nerds, data junkies, and love our kitties :cat:

Thanks! Have been home testing all month. Will work on the spreadsheet tonight and put all my saved data in. I'm just switching glucose meters because the vet one is so expensive for replacement strips. I've been looking around on the boards but haven't come across it yet.... I'm picking up a relion meter. I'm assuming the reading will be different than those of a vet meter. Is there a conversion chart somewhere that I can use until I get more familiar with the numbers?

No, there's no conversion chart but you'll become familiar with the too high, OK and too low number ranges. Human meters read lower, usually by more at high numbers and less at low numbers. Make sure you select the template for a human meter when you set up your spreadsheet. It affects the automatic cell colour coding at low BGs.

If you decide to stick with the Alphatrak, the strips are cheapest are Adwdiabetes.com.... With a $5 discount code they are $48. $52 on amazon with same day shipping for prime members if you need them fast.

If you switch many here use the relion micro.

Thanks! Right now I'm using the vet gluco gauge that the vet sold me. For 25 strips he wanted $60. I said no way! That's why I'm switching. :)

oh no way. and I thought my aphatrak was expensive at about a dollar each. I'm sorry but that's just not right. there's no reason for that. If you want to stick with a pet meter, than get the alphatrak... or switch to a human meter.
