? Alphatrak vs Alphatrak 2

My vet needed his (generously loaned) Alphatrak 2 back for the week-end, because their other Alphatrak didn't seem to be working. I did still bring it home with me to see if I could get anything out of it rather than flying blind during the week-end.

First thing I noticed is that when I turn it on it switches to the "stick + droplet" animation without waiting for me to put it in. Normal? Or disfunctional?

Seems to be working (the reading is pleasantly low so I'm cautious)

It comes on without a strip? Strange. I have one but I use a pettest meter. I bought it at Amazon as a spare and liked it better then the AT. The strips are much cheaper.
