Being a newbie at this, I was rather confused about the differences between the human meter and the pet meter, but because my vet uses the AlphaTrak, I chose to switch to it from the FreeStyle Lite. Clearly the cost factor for test strips is a big concern so I understand why most choose to use a human glucometer. For me, I thought it best to use the same one as my vet so that we are seeing the same range. For that reason, I've edited the Feline Diabetes Spread Sheet (human meter) to reflect the values for the AlphaTraker (attached if you’d like to use it). It’s color coordinated to match the colors of the AlphaTraker Data Master, so if your vet uses the Data Master they will be able to understand the readings at a glance.

I also found that the AlphaTrak reads higher than the FreeStyle Lite. I don’t know if or what the differences are between other meters. I hope this might help others who use the AlphaTrak. :smile:

See my signature link Glucometer Notes for reference ranges using human glucometers.

The accuracy of both himan and pet meter is only +/- 20% and because of that there is not real conversion. Pet meters tend to read lower than pet meters;
Here is one data point

I just did two tests with my original AlphaTrak and my human Easy Gluco Plus meter. Both comparisons used same drop of blood from two different cats
Dulce OTJ
AT = 72
Easy Gluco Plus = 54

Badgar
AT = 377
Easy Gluco Plus = 331

Here's a pic of the +/- 20% for the human meter.

The outer bars, if used for estimating an AlphaTrak would get even wider. Meters are only supposed to give you a clue, not replace lab testing.
