There's one vet tech at the ER who can actually communicate! I talked to her yesterday morning and assumed that all updates would be that thorough, but after calling yesterday during the daytime and getting hardly anything except "he's resting comfortably", I was glad to hear her voice again this morning.

The wonderful news is he ate some last night and again this morning! Not sure how often the do the ketone test, but she didn't have an update on that. She said his BG was in the mid- to high 300s almost all day yesterday. The internist said he'd update me midday today (of course, they also said he'd call me yesterday by noon and we didn't talk until 6:30, so again, I ask God for patience and some right now would be nice  )

Oh, and his blood work they did at admission showed his kidney numbers to be within normal ranges.

I know I said it before, but I really appreciate your thoughts and prayers and suggestions to test for ketones!

Thanks for the update, Ginny! Eating is great news. I know you want him home but it sounds like he's improving and that's the important thing. Go away, nasty ketones!

Eating is great!!!!! That is the normally the biggest obstacle--eating is key in getting the ketones to disappear!

His bg might stay high for a few days----but, it will come down.

Sounds encouraging this morning.

So glad to see this news about Alex, Ginny. Scary time for you. You do have good advisors on PZI who know a lot about ketones (more than they might like  ) so they will keep you on track.

Alex update:
I talked to the internist again today (I have one appointment on my calendar to donate blood and when does he call? As I'm pumping out the blood, my cell phone was ringing.) Anyway, here was his comment. "Alex is doing OK". His blood glucose is very erratic --in 300 and 400s. He ate at 2am, 7am and 10am (some canned and dry food--dry, arghhh). He's waiting for Alex to pee so he can recheck ketones and infection.

He's estimating 3-5 days in the hospital.

Glad to hear he's eating! Will they let you go visit, or is it even possible for you to get by there? They always call at the wrong time! I know you're anxious to get him back home.

I wouldn't stress about the numbers. He is at the vet and eating dry food so his numbers don't reflect where he would be at home. As soon as you get him home, you can get him back on track. Don't forget that breathing thing, Ginny.

Just make sure that he has no ketones before he is released .... and ask if they have a ketone meter that checks his blood, which they should have.

Also, I wouldn't worry about his numbers, which are not that bad for being in ER and I would suspect the dry is playing into that. When you get him home you can work on his diet but I would ask them not to feed him dry. (unless that's all he'll eat) I am surprised though that with a R drip that he is staying hi, usually a day on a drip and the #'s drop.

All in all you've done a great job! Sometimes ER's release too soon after an incident, are they calling it DKA?
You want no ketones and decent #'s before you take him home. The first time Payne went into DKA she was in ER for a week, was released with small ketones and still not enough insulin and was back in 3 days.

With Payne insulin is the key. Had I understood that one factor we would never have gone into DKA again! She is a big gulper and if you go down too much .... all our prayers are going your way.

Thinking about you today Ginny. Hoping Alex is feeling much better and can get home to you soon.
Warm and healing thoughts comin’ your way!
