I just got off the phone with staff at the ER. In addition to all the things I knew yesterday (ketones and UTI), he had a slight fever. This morning, the fever is down and he has urinated for them, but still hasn't eaten. She said he was resting and doing pretty good. Morning BG was 151. She said it was typical that kitties with DKA might stay in the hospital for 3 days.

And lastly, while these are not her words, he's pissed! That's my boy.

Glad to hear his bg is down. When Kitty was DKA her bg stayed above 600 for 4.5 days, finally on day 5 she started showing a response to the Prozinc. When they first go in with DKA, they normally give them R insulin before going back to the longer lasting insulins (well, that is my understanding). Kitty was able to come off of the R after 1.5 days, but it took a few days for her to respond to the Prozinc.

Kitty stayed in the hospital for 4 days. That is the best place for Alex at this time.....they have all the tools to monitor him and get him proper treament.

It sounds crazy, but I am glad Alex is alert and "pissed", it would be a lot more alarming if he was be subdued!

Have the ketones cleared? It only took Kitty one day to clear the ketones, hopefully Alex has cleared them---the fluids will help with that.

Please continue the updates. I will be thinking about Alex and you today......

So sorry Alex is at the vet but glad to hear he’s feisty ;) That has to be a good sign. Hopefully he will be back at home with you very soon. cat_pet_icon

I am so sorry I didnt hear about Alex until this morning...
I am so glad that he is feeling better, and yes pissed is a good sign!
Praying for the both of you!

So glad to hear that Alex is feisty! That's a good sign. You did a great job getting him to the ER when you did yesterday. I know you must have been beside yourself with worry, but you didn't do anything wrong. Hope the appointments go well today and that you like the new specialist! Thanks so much for keeping us updated. We were all worried about him and you!

Pissed is good!! I am so glad he is better .... all our prayers are with you both.

The first time Payne went DKA was when she was Dx.it was sorta like a double whammy! Oh, your cat is diabetic and she will be in ER for a week almost dying ....

You did really good taking him in right away! you are a super bean!! :YMHUG:

I guess the ER and associated internist is extremely busy today, so I'm in holding mode. Alex, they say, is resting, and his last BG was 404 (yikes, we haven't seen that high of a number in weeks) and that the internist will call me this afternoon.

God grant me patience!

ER's are difficult to dialog with but the important thing is .... they are treating Alex.

404 is not a bad # for ER, Payne stayed at 600+ for days but still had the energy to swat at people who were messing with her :)

I am with Nancy...a bg in the 400s is not bad for a cat in the ER that is in any stage of DKA.

Hang in there and keep us updated.

I'm sure it's driving you crazy waiting...I'm not very patient! Sending lots of prayers & good thoughts for you & Alex! I know you will but let us know as soon as you can!

Finally!! I heard back from the internist. Not really too much to report, but Alex still is testing postivie for ketones and he still is not interested in food. Doc said the loss of appetite goes hand in hand with the positive ketones. In looking back at all the changes since 7/15, he is trying to determine the cause of the ketones b/c we really don't want to do through this more than once.
on 7/13, saw old vet just to bring her up-to-date on Alex and wanted her to order PZI--she wanted urine sample
on 7/15, I changed insulin to BCP PZI--Internist says we might need to go back to ProZinc
on 7/20, urine culture showed a UTI and we started Clavamox (internist is not certain that this urine culture was obtained properly b/c if you read about it, they are supposed to use a needle to extract urine from the bladder--he says that something from the air could have made it show up as an infection)
on 7/22, Alex threw up his dinner (different Wellness flavor we'd never tried before)
7/23, didn't eat much
7/24, didn't eat, very lethargic, hiding in unusual places--we went to ER.

Doc says we're still early in the game--only 24 hours in and it could take between 3 and 5 days.

In the meantime, and don't you find this odd, Audrey (Alex's littermate) appears not to miss him at all. The same kind of thing happened to the prior set of cats I had. The male was pts and I feared the female would mourn, but she seemed happy to be queen of the roost.

Glad to hear he is doing ok. I wondered about the change in insulin last night. Why does he think you might need to go back?

I have Thumper's litter mate and they hate each other so I'm not surprised about Audrey!

Glad to hear you have a report back.

It is still early, it takes time for them to recover....DKA is really hard on kitties. Please keep us updated.

((((Alex)))) I've been sending healing vines to you all day. Interesting report from the vet. Did they say why you'll need to switch back to prozinc? The dates do kind of coincide with the change, but is it because they've not used BCP before?
Sending purrs and prayers for Alex. cat_pet_icon

He didn't say we'd definitely go back to ProZinc, but that it might be an option. He's supposed to call me again mid-day tomorrow and I'm hoping he will let me email Alex's spreadsheet to him (and actually look at ti :o ).

And thanks again everybody, for your thoughts and prayers.

Believe it or not......my vet actually asked me to bring Kitty's tid SS to her. She said I was the first client to dose tid and she would like to see it.

But, you can't win them all..........she then said for me not to us the U100s, just in case I measured it out wrong????!!!!!!!!!

LOL, print out the conversion chart and give a copy to her. My vet didn't want me using them either until I gave him a copy. He put it on their wall in the back of their clinic now. Ha!

Judging by the schedule you listed above you have stayed on top of this, but wasn't getting much help from the vets. You did everything you could.

Alex is in good hands now.

Hang in there. Please keep us updated.

Sending prayers and reiki for Alex.
If he feisty and swatting at people, surely thats a good sign.
I wonder if they think the BCP PZI contributed somehow since they said you may want to go back to ProZinc? Thats interesting.
Will be thinking of you and Alex and hope he will be able to come home soon.
