Advice using the Lantus pen?

I've been having pressure issues (i think) with my pen. This is the first pen I've ever attempted to use. The syringe has trouble sucking up the insulin, and i end up with a lot of air in my syringes. Does the dial and button on the back do anything to help with pressure issues? Am I supposed to be using the dial part at all? I did a search here and found a few posts about using the dial and button but those were mostly about getting rid of bubbles. :?:

Re: Advise using the Lantus pen?

i had a lot of that same problem. you have to dial the end thingie and push out the air like you were using it for a dose as it was intended, but you need one of the pens that attaches to it in order to make that work. go to lantus.com and search for "bubbles in pen" and i think it will turn up the directions. my pharmacist gave me the needle that goes on the end to get the air out.

a lot of people use them successfully here but i was pretty frustrated with my last one. maybe someone who uses one regularly has another idea that will help.

one thing to watch for - you absolutely don't want the lubricant inside the syringe to go into the insulin in the pen. i had trouble with the negative pressure - when i withdrew insulin into the pen if i let go for even a split second, it sucked the insulin out of the syringe back into the pen. that contaminates it. just watch for that - they're too expensive to waste a pen!

I'm still on my first pen, but I had similar trouble for the first 10-20 units. After that, it came out much more easily. I think that the plunger needed to get "unstuck".

Wow - I never had any issues with my pens. Can you call the pharmacy and ask to exchange it? I wouldn't be too happy after spending the $$ for it and then have problems. Grrrrr....

I have had the same problem with all 3 pens we've had so far...I just end up redrawing several times. It's weird...sometimes it's really difficult to get anything other than air, other times, I get a good dose immediately.

Sorry, that wasn't much help, but I can at least commiserate!

i only used 2 pens - the first one was fine, the second one was a nightmare of air and bubbles. it was like that little black stopper inside - the one that moves with the insulin's reducing volume - was stuck. it wasn't even level in my last pen. there was lots of air inside the pen - you could see it.

i called lantus and they said to take it back to the pharmacy. i took it back to the pharmacy and they called the lantus company. the company then wouldn't exchange my pen because it was for a cat and lantus isn't sold for use in cats, and because i was using a needle to poke into the stopper instead of the pen needles that are supposed to be used with the pen.

the pharmacist gave me a pen needle (that people are supposed to use with it) and i tried to express the air that way - which did work. it didn't solve the problem, though and it still kept getting stuck. then the final straw for me was when i was trying to withdraw insulin from the pen, and because punkin's on a large dose i was trying to adjust my hand to pull the plunger farther. the second i let go of the plunger, the suction inside the pen sucked the insulin right back out of the syringe into the pen. there went a string of bubbles and insulin back into the pen, right along with the lubricant inside of the syringe, contaminating the insulin. grrrr.

i switched back to the vial - punkin's on a big enough dose we use it up. but also the latest information (see the sticky on How to store and use lantus/levemir) says that if it's handled correctly lantus vials have been lasting up to 6 months. so perhaps even those of you and smaller doses would be able to use a vial.

at the time there was a thread about this problem and several people also had trouble with it. if you have trouble with any of it and are contacting the Lantus company, try not to mention you're using it for a cat or using needles to poke into the pen. that's a guarantee of no help from them.

The pen needle pokes through the rubber stopper as well. How is an insulin syringe needle any different? I posted some info about that here: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=48255

The same goes with Human blood glucose meter companies. Never tell them that you are using their product on a pet.

I had the same problem with my first pen.
I just took it back to Costco and they replaced it.
They suggest I just purchase a box of 5 cartridge refills that go with the opticlick (clikstar) pen and not use the prefilled solostar pen at all.
Since then I haven't had a problem.
I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure if you can just purchase the cartridges in the USA.
Here we can purchase either the Solostar Pen or the cartridges alone (for the opticlick pen).

Right on the insulin website, it tells you that in an emergency situation when your pen isn't working to insert a syringe into the end just like you would with a vial.

I'm hoping to change to Lantus soon and am trying to figure out if I should go with the pens or vial. Is this problematic experience with the pens more common than not? It seems that a box of 5 pens would be much cheaper in the long run, if they work right. But I can't afford to get stuck with something I can't use!

hi linda! probably 95% of the people on this site using lantus use the pens - and most of them don't have trouble with most of the pens. i think you're probably safe going with the pens. punkin has acro and his dose is around 13-14units now, so we use up a vial. if he didn't, i'd probably get the pens as well.
