Advice re: Solensia

My sweet fuzzy love is doing well despite a little stubborn UTI that required two courses of antibiotics. She is not moving as well as she used to tho - and pretty much just sleeps, eats, and visits the litter box. I’m considering Solensia but the horror stories on Reddit etc. have scared me. My vet is all for it - before I even got the chance to ask if she would give it if it was her cat, she mentioned that she had her elderly cat on it for years. She also feels that a lot of the horror stories are correlation without causation because it’s often prescribed to elderly animals, combined with pure statistics bc it’s very widely used. I gave her two doses a few years back but when her kidney values declined I got scared and stopped. I’d love to hear from anyone that has made this decision, either way. I’m also going to make an appt at the vet where I take her for emergencies just for a second opinion. Thank you all! ❤️

My civvie has osteopenia and osteoporosis from years of steroid use. She has IBD and small cell lymphoma which is in remission. We tried tapering her off the prednisolone, but her guts complained and she got ileus. So we are as low a dose of pred as we can go. Last year she stopped jumping up on bed and was much slower going up and down stairs. So the vet suggested trying Solensia. It has been a miracle for her. It's been about 10 months now. Her kidney numbers also worsened, but would they have anyway? I've heard kidney disease is very common for SCL kitties. Her last blood work shows her kidney values are stable the last six months. I find that towards the end of the month after the injection she pees a bit less, so I've been stretching out the injection to 5-6 weeks instead of a month and she's still as mobile. My vet says she finds Solensia works in about 70% of cats. For us it's a QOL tradeoff.

After my cat had a very scary reaction right after a Solensia shot, I won’t personally use it on another cat. I went down the rabbit hole reading stories, studies, background info, the history of Solensia, even why the comparable human drug is banned. Like many drugs, it can seemingly work wonders in one animal and have apparent adverse effects in others.

I can’t prove a cause-effect for what happened with my cat. But it was dramatic enough that I wasn’t willing to risk a repeat.

Some people see good results with Adequan injections. Another option is acupuncture.
