Advice re: homecooked receipes for diabetic cats.

Hello.

can anyone advise me about "home-made" receipes for a diabetic cat please???? I am getting so confused as to whether to use dry food, or wet food and what they actually contain. Someone suggested i try making my own meals for COCO my diabetic boy.

I'm all rather new to this as well, but the overwhelming choice for most folks is to feed a wet food, preferably in jelly (as opposed to gravy) for the diabetic kitties, as dry food altogether still tends to run too high in carbs. Have you been able to check Binky's wet food list? http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodNew.html obviously the lower the carbs the better, and if you're after foods with high quality ingredients, in the US I believe the brands are EVO and Wellness, but as I live in Northern Ireland, I wouldn't quote me on that one! Fancy Feast Classic is also meant to be very good and more readily available.

Regarding feeding raw/homemade, here's a few other links I saw in the FAQ, which should get you started, but hopefully others who are more experienced will chime in as well! http://holisticat.com/well-fed/

This last one is fairly dense, but definitely a comprehensive piece regarding cat nutrition and the importance of good nutrition in successful treatment of diabetes. http://www.catinfo.org/

Just saw one of your older posts and looks like you're in the UK, happy days, I'm on more familar territory then!

I've found a wet food called Feline Fayre, I think you can find it at ASDA, Morrisons and B+M home stores, it's fairly cheap and the ingredient list is blessedly short.

Applaws is also a brilliant food, but the wet version isn't 'complete' so wouldn't be suitable if that's the only thing you're going to feed (the dry stuff weighs in at 12.5-15% carbs on average, so if you're struggling to get your cat to eat wet food, this one isn't too bad).

I've also found this: http://www.naturesmenu.co.uk/ and the cat pouches don't contain any unnecessary veg.

I'm wondering why you want "cooked" recipes? I also asked about a cooked recipe here a few months ago with few to no responses. You can, in the short term trial your kitty on various options like raw kidney mixed with raw beef. Try some liver pieces along with some fresh chicken pieces - mine loves chicken breast. Cats are sticklers for very fresh - if it's been around a few days, forget it! Just try some raw in various variations until you get a sense of what your kitty might like in raw. Then you can formulate a mixture that includes the things that will be healthy for your cat. I know how fussy they can be. My cat is allergic to most can foods (high carbs or low carbs) so I'm really struggling with food for him. I've found a butcher who grinds up rabbits but that caused a constipation problem - I have to work the meat thru my fingers trying to remove the bone fragments before I serve it. If I could do the Fancy Feast Classics's I would be so happy - but try to get him on to some raw each day. I don't do dry coz it puts my kitties numbers up and they are high enough!

I have been doing a transition to raw for a while now, reading and experimenting. I purchased some foods that were premade and my 2 out of 3 girls are going for it. I have purchased a grinder and waiting for it to come in the mail.

My youngest Lil Sista will eat ANYTHING raw, but my Sugar Bean that is 8 yrs. is a little skeptial. My civvie Slappy that is 15 will not eat it at all... she will always be a problem eater.

I did what was suggested on that site for semi cooking the chicken and freezing it. That is working really well. I have to puree it for Bean to memic ff better. She is eating it tho which makes mommy bean very happy. I cut up the rest in pea sizes and that seemed to help too.

Thank you all for your advice re: home made foods, especially advice re: whats available in the UK. I keep seeing posts about lots of foods, but only seems to be available in USA. However I have found a food called "bozita" that is available in the UK through limited suppliers, low in carb & high in protein.

I had considered giving COCO some raw meat, as my neighbour gives it to her cats once a week. So I might give it a try.

I went to Pets at Home, UK big pet retailer superstore and spent ages looking at every tin of cat food and reading their ingredients, Im sure they wondered what on earth I was doing!. I did find "APPLEPAWS" which i bought a few cans of, and COCO loved it, wolfed it back. So I will be going back there to get some more flavours.

Thank you to the lady from Ireland with your advice, Im actually Irish myself, I come from Dublin, my family still lives there, and I will try out that food from Asda, ive got one nearby.
