Take the capsule apart, mix well/dissolve with 10 teaspoons of water: 1 teaspoon will have about 1/10 of the capsule. Add 1 teaspoon to a meal. Refrigerate unused portion.ms

Uh, NO. The key word is patience.

You may be seeing what we call a bounce. A bounce happens when the glucose drops fast and/or the glucose drops to an unfamiliar level. This triggers compensatory hormones which release stored glucose (glycogen). That brings the glucose level up and then some, for as long as 3 days. You do not adjust the dose based on the high numbers. Dose increases are based on the nadir (the lowest glucose after the shot).

Also, Lantus builds up gradually. It doesn't have a shot = drop effect. It takes 5-7 days on the 1st dose level and 3-5 days on any later dose levels for it to reach a smoothly rolling control of the glucose.

So only give one tenth? I saw on this forum that some were giving 3,000 mcg a day with success?

That'll teach me to do this on my phone (vision problems - sorry!)

5000 mcg = 5 mg and you indicated this was the full capsule
3000 mcg = 3 mg which is the dose folks normally give per day to a cat with diabetic neuropathy

If you empty the capsule into 5 teaspoons of water, dissolve, stir well, and measure out 3 teaspoons, you'll have a roughly 3 mg dose, and 2 in reserve. Or mix 3 capsules into 15 teaspoons of water, to make 5 doses. Refrigerate what isn't used. Always shake/stir well before measuring a dose, in case it settles.

Diabetes care can get expensive, so rather than waste it by giving more than can be used, make the mix and portion out what you need.

Thanks. That makes sense now . I am so glad I found this forum. Even my vet is backing off a bit and letting me follow my instincts (and the forum )
