Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take?

I have to take Hidey in for his dental Thursday. He is getting a cleaning and at least one tooth pulled. He has been off insulin since 3/18 although his numbers are slowly rising, but I think its due to his bad tooth. What precautions should I take? Last time he had teeth pulled they gave him a pain killer, dont remember the name, also I can't remember if they gave him antibiotics or not. Is there pain meds or antibiotics that should be avoided? Is there anything special I should ask them to do? I know I was nervous last time he went in for his cleaning, but now I'm even more nervous nailbite_smile Im also thinking about them lancing a cyst off the top of this head. It about 1 cm in size. They offered to remove it last time, it is not cancerous, so I said no since it doesnt seem to bother him. Well, about 2 or 3 months ago he was playing with one of my other cats and I guess they got him in that spot with their back claw and bleed pretty bad, I kept cleaning it, and took forever to heal....now Im worried about that happening again and it getting infected. Do you think this is ok, or should I just leave it be?

Also I know he is due to get his rabies and vaccines, should I have them do it all at once so I dont have to have him go through the stress of going back in a month? Rabies are mandatory here yearly and I am now keeping them up to date on the FIV due to the fact that I worry about us taking in a stray (I had to keep my other cat Hot Rod in another room for 2 months since they weren't up to date at the time)

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

Real quick, because company just came over, but I get the live vaccines only. And both of my cats have NO COVENIA and NO METACAM listed in bold red letters on their charts.
Good luck with your dental. I'm sure others will be by with more advice.

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

If it were me, I would go ahead and have them take care of the cyst since he will be under, that's a minor procedure.

As for the vaccines, I personally would NOT do it on the same day. His body has enough to deal with- the anesthesia, meds, stress, plus getting a tooth out. Adding the vaccines is putting more strain on his system. But that's just my opinion.

I have had kitties with bad reactions to vaccines, or sometimes vaccines make them feel poorly for a couple days, I feel it's too much.

The girls at the front desk at my vet's will always push for it when we are in for a dental, and I always insist no, in fact I have to sign a waiver saying I am refusing them.

Thanks everyone, Ill wait on the vaccines. I'll probably have them lance that cyst then since he'll already be under. I didnt worry about it before but it just looked painful when one of them got it last time and took forever to heal :( I just felt horrible

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

I would consider surgical removal of the cyst vice just lancing. The slow healing is a concern

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

Metacam is a pain killer that has a black box warning from the FDA because of >500 reported incidents of acute renal failure in kitties. So, we are not fans of Metacam here and think it's better to use something like Buprenex which has few if any bad side effects.

Convenia is an antibiotic that is long lasting and meant to treat skin infections. The issue is, if your cat has an adverse reaction, you are stuck because the injection of Convenia can last several weeks. Once it's in, you can't take it back out. There are better antibiotics for use in oral situations. Check with your vet.

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

Thank you, I now have a list of medications not to administer. Im so nervous about tomorrow nailbite_smile

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

Besides being a pain killer, Metacam is also anti inflammatory drug. Buprenex (buprenorphine hydrochloride) is only a pain killer

Re: Advice please. Dental Thursday. What precautions to take

I do not have Buprenex on my list of no-no's, should it be or is it ok? I know they're going to send me home. I just dug out the old paper work from his last dental and I found I they did give him convenia  and the pain med they gave him was onsior. Any flags with that? Also they gave him an injection of buprenorphine, is that the same as buprenex?

Edited to say: Just searched this site for onsior and it seems that one is ok for short term.

'Samantha', what a beautiful name (has a kind of 'feline quality' to it!).
Good luck for tomorrow, Samantha. Your Hidey will soon be back home with you, safe and sound.
