my 13 year-old civie cat has had two urinary blockages in one month. the vet wants to do a PU. I'm worried he's too old and is not in the best of health for this surgery. The alternative would be to put him to sleep. I would appreciate any advice. thank you. I have to make a decision by tomorrow morning.

did you read dr. lisa post about this. someone posted a link.
cat needs water, water, water in his diet and placed on canned food. low carb, high protein. add water to food to make a soup.
the #1 cause of blockage in male cats (rare in females) is dry food and lack of water in their diet. 70% of outside feral cats get the water from the animals they eat. cats do not normally drink water.

my vet suggested this surgery for my cat and I declined and started him on a proper diet and he NEVR had another blockage

I agree, 13 is not old, if your kitty needs to get it done then do so but change to a wet diet as soon as possible.

I agree with the others. What's kitty currently eating? My cat had a very bad blockage as a young cat and nearly 'popped', he's going to be 16 soon and the only treatment he gets is lots of water.
