Hello everyone!

Wow, it's been so long since I've been here - now there are two Lantus groups! Well, I hope I'm posting in the right one...

First off, the Porkchop is great, quickly approaching his 2 year annifursary. This is about my neighbor's cat. When she was over to borrow a can opener, she met Porky, and I mentioned how he is diabetic, but currently in remission. She told me one of her cats is diabetic, but she isn't treating her, didn't think she'd be able to (cat is a little nervous, doesn't like too much handling). She *had* thought about trying pills... cat(2)_steam

I didn't say too much then, but tonight I went over to visit, and told her that I didn't want to be rude or pushy or anything, but I would be willing to help her treat her cat. I have 5 pens left (expires 3/2012), syringes, a meter and strips, so....I'm ready! And she agreed!

Since it's been a while since I had to shoot, I thought I'd post here for a little guidance/reassurance? I'm going over to her place Saturday, where I can explain everything and show her how to shoot and test. I'll also find out more about her cat - I know it's a female, not sure about age, weight, or how long she's been diabetic, or what her diet is. She did mention tonight that her cat is showing signs of neuropathy, so if someone could point me to posts about the supplement that's helpful (or provide the info here), I would be grateful.

I figure I could start at 1 unit (or 1/2 unit, if anyone thinks that's best, without any data whatsoever to go on).

I just couldn't sit by, knowing that her cat is going untreated, when I could possibly help.

I also told her about this site - maybe I can get her to join!

I'll post when I know more after Saturday. Thanks everyone!

It's great to hear that Porky is doing great and what you are doing for your neighbor is incredible!

Remember to talk to her about food and give her the link to Dr. Lisa's site (www.catinfo.org).

Has her cat been recently vetted? It may be important to know if her cat is healthy and if there's any history of ketones, etc. Remember to suggest Ketostix.

There is a form of methy B-12 that is formulated for cats -- Zobaline -- no flavoring and no sugar. It's available through Amazon.

Remember treats! If her cat is skittish, treats may be a big help.

As for dose, you can base initial dose on weight (dose = 0.25 x ideal weight in kilograms). If her cat is skittish and you have concerns about whether she'll be able to test, starting at a lower dose, like 0.5u, may be wise.

you've gotten great advice, i just wanted to pat your back and say kudos to you for helping out your neighbor and her kitter! that's awesome. :-D

Same here - just kudos to you, scritches to Porky, and good luck going forward.

Maybe warm socks to soothe the kitty?

That's one lucky kitty to have chosen you for a neighbor! I hope you can make it work.
