Advice Needed...

It would be amazing if I could get some people to look at Angels spreadsheet and give me some advice.

- I've been dosing her based on her PS #'s and the more I study her SS it seems so inconsistent and such drastic changes from day to day.. so is this really helping her?

- Should we try a set dose for a week and see if that works at all? Like this morning I dosed her a little higher than I thought I should with her just being above 200 because I knew BF would be monitoring and my dose proved to not be enough. Sometimes it is though so what is the trick and how do I figure this out lol.

- In my opinion her day time numbers are pretty darn good. It's her PS that are wacky. So the insulin IS working just not working long enough.

- It troubles me to think about changing insulins because besides the fact that she does have diabetes you would never be able to tell she has diabetes lol. She has had ZERO complications from this insulin. Her appetite is great, her bathroom stuff is great, all negative ketone tests, she is playful, loving and so happy. Right before she was diagnosed she spent a lot of time under the bed by herself. She NEVER does that anymore. She lays on her back sprawled in the middle of the floor sunning her belly all day. :) So my point is that I'm hesitant about switching.

- Any advice on possibly dosing her 3 times a day instead of 2? I know this would be so much more work but if it COULD work and get her regulated it would be so worth it. I could possibly take 2-3 days off work to be able to be home 24/7 if we do decide to give this a try to closely monitor her.

- Based on her SS and date of being diagnosed how much longer should we wait before we decide to either switch insulins or dose 3 times a day?

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Cherish,
Sorry but I am not knowledgeable enough to advise but I have just posted a similar question. My vet in the UK encouraged me to dose the same amount consistently but as my cats BG has recently fallen I didn't think it was safe to do so.
I'm sure you will get some more experienced members advising you soon.
Regards, Anthony

I don't have a definite answer but a good first experiment would be to try consistent doses AM/PM for several days. Maybe 3 u? To dose three times a day, take the usual total insulin given in a day and divide it into 3 equal doses given 8 hours apart. More monitoring is needed and there could be dose overlap that might create unexpected effects.

We can get really focused on numbers and want to get them down into ideal ranges but from what you say about Angel, she's doing really well. That's an important consideration too.

I was thinking 3 also! @JanetNJ what do you think?

What do you mean by dose overlap? Also her dosage changes from day to day. There's no way to figure out how to divide by 3. I'd probably just have to start low

A dose of Vetsulin can last 8+ hours. Let's say it can last 9 hours in your kitty but you dose every 8 hours. That means when you give a new dose, there's still a small portion of the previous dose in her doing its thing. That adds to the dose you're about to give. Changing doses day to day adds the task of trying to decide how much to give every 8 hours based on a BG test right before. That will fluctuate. It's possible to do but you might want to post asking specifically for input from people who have done it.

Are you asking if I think 3 a day is a good idea or if I think 3 u 3x a day? I think dosing 3 times a day is worth a try if you can, but that starting with a dose of 3 u might be a bit high. I would start at 2.5 and go up only if needed.
No to try 3U twice a day for like a week. A consistent dose.
