Help please:

Very hungry cat with low-ish blood sugars of 8.0 at +10 (10.5 to be precise)

Will need to feed him as he wont take no for an answer, he is ever so gently but insistantly clawing me as I type...

So, feed in small portions and retest, but won't have a PMPS then. When to test and when to decide to inject him and how much to inject him with? Gah! How can I kep his curve nice and steady when he starts the evening at this place? Answers on a postcard...?

Thank you!!

8 mmol/L = 144 mg/dL

He is in no danger of hypoglycemia.
If he needs to eat, feed him a small amount.
Yes, he could be a bit higher at pre-shot; be sure to consider that in deciding a dose.

Mue, is there any chance you could add the type of meter you are using (human or pet-calibrated) into your signature, please, so that we can understand Pedro's BG numbers better.

Re: Advice needed now please: CanInsulin cat testing 8.0 at

Fed him in two lots at +11 and after I tested again at +12 when he was 13.8 (human glucometer).
Gave him 1.75 units of Caninsulin and tested again an hour and a bit later: 11.5

Just before he started showing "sugar seeking" behaviour, searching rug for crumbs, licking stove, etc so I tested him at what would have been +4 and he was 2.8, so fed half a pouch of mid carb calorific food and then tested again 30mins later. He was 2.7, so fed a tiny bit more and will test again in 10 minutes to see if we managed to halt the drop off.

He is lying next to me, curled up and settling down to sleep. ^_^

Tested again at not quite +6 and he is back up at 7.0, I guess a safer place to be. Heading to bed now. ^_^

Hi Mue,

Thanks for adding the meter info. Helps a lot. :thumbup

Well done on catching the appetite uptick tonight. Based on my experience of Saoirse on Caninsulin, I would urge caution on Pedro's dosage. Caninsulin drops the numbers so hard and so fast and Pedro's levels tonight were very low again. Does your vet have an out of hours number? I'd strongly suggest calling them to discuss Pedro's Caninsulin dose with a view to reducing it.

Definitely! My vets are open Sunday's, so will ring them.

OH got up really early this morning and tested him at what would have been +10 and he was 25.something, haven't checked the meter yet. So I wonder if Pedro went out later in the night and found himself something else to eat. The rises and falls certainly are steep. :/

More of a reason to hope for longer acting insulin because if we stayed with CanInsulin long term I definitely would want to spread the administration out as the 12/12 makes for more "busy" curves. :/

Off to spend the day baking Christmas cookies with friends. Leaving OH in charge of cats and kid.
