Harley needs to start getting the Adequin injections for his arthritus. When I picked it up from the clinic the vet showed me and had me feel the muscle groups to inject into on his clinic cat but when I got home and felt for the muscles on Herley they didn't feel the same. The injection sites seem like they are in awkward places and I'm nervous to try it by myself.

My last resort is to take Harley back to the clinic and have the Vet show me again on him, how to do it, but I thought I would ask here first.

We are to do the loading doses every 3 1/2 days for a month then once every two weeks. I know that I'm supposed to pull back on the plunger to make sure I don't get blood then inject.

Any help and advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Robin and stiff legged Harley

My KB didn't have much muscle mass in his hind quarters so the first few injections I had done at the vets. When I started giving them myself, she told me it was ok to give them sub-q instead of in the muscle as I was worried about hitting a nerve. The vet might have to show you on Harley if he's not as muscular as the one you learned with.

Thanks for the sub q suggestion. I think you're right that Harley isn't as muscular as the clinic cat, that would explain why it doesn't feel the same. Honestly, I thought it was me being a chicken.

Are there alternate injection sites? The vet showed me two, one was underneath his thigh and the other was underneath his armpit.

Adequan has been approved for subcutaneous injection. I don't know if it makes a difference where you give the shot, but you could stay near areas where the arthritis is worse, probably the hind quarters, as the spine and hips are where a lot of cats have it.

I have Gandalf's acupuncture vet give his Adequan and she uses acupuncture points, so that may be why your vet suggested those alternative areas, as the ones on the "thighs" you mention sound like where she does it. Here's a diagram - the one she uses is just a couple inches below the tail, BL 54/40 on the back of the leg, but that may be specific for Gandalf, so look at the other places indicated and see if one looks easier for you.

My vet showed me how to give the Adequan IM in the muscles that run along the spine. I measure out about an inch from either side of the spine. That's how I gave the shot the first time.

Then Jess and Earl told me Sub Q was fine. I did it that way the next 2 times.

I felt that Ennis got more action from the IM shot, so the shot last Thursday I gave IM. Ennis clearly got more action. A few hours later he ran away from me when he thought I was going to clean his ears. He also ran playing with Casey. He looked like an old man in a full body cast, but he was running. I haven't seen him run for a couple years.

Also, I think Adequan works on arthritis in the joints, not in the spine.

You might want to try different techniques as I did. One might be better for Harley.

Good luck. I think Adequan is a miracle drug for Ennis.
