Adequan -question about bovine sensitivity

I was considering starting my cats (brother and sister) on Adequan once it is available again, but just found out it is derived from cattle. My cats have extreme bovine sensitivity - vomiting after eating anything with cow in it including a glucosamine supplement that had bovine.

Can anyone speak to this? Does anyone here have cats that can't eat anything from cows on Adequan? I didn't know if the fact that it is injectable would matter since it is bypassing the gut.

My diabetic already has so many issues with food and vitamin sensitivities that I was interested in Adequan since it is injected, but now I worry because of the bovine.

Thank you for any input.

I just started my kitty on Adequan. I did a lot of research and never came across anything like you're saying. Doesn't mean it's not true, but I haven't heard that yet. My cat isn't having any trouble with the Adequan, but we're only on the second injection and he doesn't have trouble eating beef.

Thanks for responding. I hope it works well for your kitty. I've read so many good things about it. We have not started it yet. My vet said it is on back order at the moment. I sent her an email asking about the bovine though.

It's supposed to do wonders. Fingers, paws and tails crossed that it does. I have already noticed a few changes in Buster. He is trotting down the hallway at times. Before, he would just walk. I am also using Dasuquin as an oral joint supplement in his food and Tramadol for pain relief, as he has one shoulder that he licks a lot. I hope your kitty doesn't have any reaction to the cow ingredients and can get some relief soon.

Picknickchick just posted on my condo that she used something called Cartrophen for her cats and it worked well. I have no idea what it's all about, but at first glance it's "a sulphated sugar of plant origin." Not cow. She's Canadian, so I don't know if it's something you can only get there. Worth researching if you have trouble with the Adequan.

Thank you all so much for the additional information and I'm glad your kitties are doing well.

I have been giving a very low dose of buprenex to Carma, but it just seems like it makes her sleep a lot and not eat very much. I will look into all the options she has. She will be the easiest of the two to treat as Gus has way more health issues than Carma.

As Tara mentioned, I've used Cartrophen. I was happy with the result. It's meant for dogs and horses, but can be used for cats very successfully. In fact, my vet said that cats do better on it than dogs, quite often. Here, it was inexpensive and vets will let you buy a vial and inject it yourself. You're supposed to inject it once a week for 4 weeks, and then once every 2 - 4 weeks, depending on how your cats are doing. I used it for my two eldest cats, River and his brother, and it gave them much greater mobility. They went from being stiff to ripply, muscular little panthers ;-)

Thank you for the info about Cartrophen. I will ask my vet but I don't think they use it at their clinic. I will see what she says though. Thank you again!
