Hi, I'm going to start my kitty on Adequan soon, and my vet never prescribed it for a cat before. I am from the FD LL site and I know some people use it for their diabetic cats. I was just trying to collect as much info as I can so I make sure the vet gets it right. If your kitty is on Adequan for arthritis could anyone share knowledge of this drug…maybe side effects, etc.

I do know some things, like it doesn't work on spinal arthritis. Some people use a larger syringe then the insulin one. Also, you have to work up to the dose your kitty will need.

I'd like to see how much people are giving their kitties from the start, and the amount of time to work up to, and end up with.…mg/ml. My kitty is 15lbs now.

Thanks!

Carly (OTJ) is getting 2.5mls in a tuberculin (I think thats what its called) syringe or 25U in a U100 insulin syringe (same amount different syringes). I cant remember what her loading dose was. I think we did a sub q injection once a week then went down to 1 every 2 weeks but she needs it every week. It starts wearing off for her after a week. We didnt change the amount just frequency. I have read some anectodal info on the internet that implies that sometimes theres a diminishing of effect over time but so far I havent seen that with Carly.

There is some confusion about if it should be subQ or IM. Officially it was designed for IM (for horses) but my vet said shes never had a problem using the canine form SubQ for cats and it is helping her, thats the main thing. IM hurts! Also, in horses they sometimes inject directly into the joint and I do not think this is done with dogs or cats, and it can have problems in horses doing it that way.

Carly has both arthritis in her leg joints and lumbosacral joint as well, so she still sometimes isnt 100percent. She seems to be hurting less on gabapentin for pain but it has made her a little more subdued. She also gets dasuquin in every meal.

Lisa, I think you mean 0.25 mls in a tuberculin syringe. A tuberculin syringe only holds 1 ml and 0.25 ml equals 25 units in a U100 syringe.

Thank you Lisa and Larry. That confusion with the 0.25 and the 2.5ml is exactly what I am having the confusion about. I think a lot of people make that mistake and I don't want to overdose my kitty. :?

So, do I need to know how much that is in "mg" and in "units"? Some of the advice about the amount confused me. I read that you give 0.5-2.5 mg per pound, and I don't know if that is the same thing. Some other info I got was in units, like 30 units… I can't count on my vet knowing this because she never prescribed it for cats before. She should at least know if she prescribed it for small dogs though. I know, I'm probably being overly couscous, and I'm sure she or a pharmacist will be able to confirm my dosing and syringe. Daphne is diabetic and so I'm used to dealing with that info. so I think I should be fine.

Thanks so much Lisa and Larry.

Oh gosh, Larry, thank you for all that info. my little brain just caught fire, so I'm going to print it out and give it to my Vet. I must have slept through that part of math/chemistry class in high school, and now I'm old and have memory problems on top of all of it. So glad we have such smart people here on FDMB, I have no idea what I would do without it.

Thanks again Larry, and nice to meet you, and wow you have lots of kitties, and a dog too! I'm Barb btw :-D
