Adequan dosage??

The vet donated some Adequan leftover from another client for Ennis' arthritis, and the vet didn't take the time to check the dosage (sigh) so he left it to me to find out from my friends on "the cat board."

Please help me check my calculations on how much to draw in terms of units (the only syringes I have). Or tell me how much you are giving your cat, the concentration you are using, and your cat's weight.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Adequan concentration is 100mg/ml.

This site says "For cats, the dose is 0.5 to 2.5 mg per pound."

Ennis is ~17 pounds. .5 to 2.5 mg times 17 lbs = 8.5mg to 42.5mg.

8.5mg divided by 100mg = .085
1ml = 1cc = 100 units
.085 times 100 units = 8.5 units

42.5mg divided by 100mg = .425
1ml = 1cc = 100 units
.425 times 100 units = 42.5 units

So I am thinking that the dosage should be somewhere between 8.5 and 42.5 units.

Because we are new to this drug, because Ennis has renal disease, and because I am a chicken, I am tending towards a conservative dose. I am thinking 20 units.

I will be shooting IM. My vet showed me how.

Your calculations look right to me. Angus was 18 pounds and got 40 mg. You might ask your vet for syringes though. The Adequan is much thicker than insulin and it is hard to push through an insulin syringe. Also, Adequan can be administered SQ. I used it that way on my vet's recommendation. Jess & Earl has posted that she uses it SQ as well.

Venita, just go back in from vet trip for Hope. Vet used to give the Adequan shots, not me, but it sounds like you got good advice.

Hi Venita.

I think your dose is low. The dose from the cat gurus is 5mg/kg. Ennis is 7.7 kg; let's say his lean body weight is 7 kg or less, so 35mg = 0.35 mL = 35 units. For Dillon I used the 30u syringe and just added a little more than 30. And it would be hard, esp if you have the short needle syringes, to get a good IM shot in. SQ use is pretty standard for kitties so I'd give that a try.

Thanks Jess. I gave him 20U today, and I used a 29G, long needle so the IM shot went well.

I wanted to go on the light side his first shot (in case of adverse reaction), but I will up him to 30U next shot. I also will do SubQ next time as that's the advice I've been getting. I am much more comfortable with SubQ.
