Philly loves his smokey

Member Since 2019
So my boy smokey has a acro DX and subsequent diabetes. Many months ago he lost the ability to "meow". Its more of just a "Meh". He still purrs fine. I think I heard him hiss fine also at an unfamiliar cat a while back. I was just wondering if anyone else's cat has had similar probs and was wondering if acro or hyperglycemia can damage vocal cords or the throat, etc. Thanks in advance!

Hello. One characteristic of acro is soft tissue and bone overgrowth. So it is very possible for throat to have issues. Ollie doesn't meow at all. She has a hoarse almost laryngitis type of grunt, I don't know how to describe it. I think in the 18 months I've had her she had 1 time it sounded like a meow, faint and raspy though.

She purrs and hisses just fine though.

Last October I noticed Rocket’s meow turned into more of a higher pitched squeak. His vet thought nothing of it. Four months later he was diagnosed with diabetes, then the acro diagnosis a month ago. In hindsight that change in his meow was his first symptom of acro (if only I had known then). :( Like Paula said, caused by soft tissue overgrowth.

My cat has a hoarse/nonexistent voice, too. He makes a lot of silent meows, but he can also make some noise, if he’s unhappy with going to the vet or some other situation. He’s only on 2.75 units. Do you think there could be a reason beyond acromegaly?

Hey everyone. Thanks for all your responses. I too said something to my vet a long time ago about his voice, and his constant "gulping"...Vet said he was fine!? Maybe they should be more on the lookout for this symptom... but smokey too has a lot of silent meows. And his meow is like you all are describing, kind of a hoarse grunt. MEH, is best way I can describe it. He makes a loud call when he wants to be heard and it sounds awful. Sounds like he is dying. Poor guy. He is such a tough guy tho. All the poking and pricking, vet visits, neuropathy, etc. I always tell him how tough and strong he is!!!
