? Accidentally dosed too high just now

I usually draw more than the amount needed into the syringe & then expel the bubbles & excess. Today I forgot to do the expel part before I shot. His usual dose is 0.5u Lantus glargine. I just now gave him about 1.25u. He has had a dose this high (as his normal dose) before, but it was months ago.

His BG has been higher than usual the past few days. A vet here suggested it might be an infection or inflammation.

Last few days BG:

8/19 AMPS 166 PMPS 278
8/20 AMPS 200 +5 157 PMPS 228
8/21 AMPS 215 +4 159 +9 130 PMPS 118 +7 145
8/21 AMPS 120 PMPS 180

I fed him high carb food & he ate it. Is there anything else to do right now other than test in an hour?

+1 205 I guess the food really did its job. Will keep testing.

***His BG never dipped to hypo overnight, do I just shoot as normal today then?

Do you have a spreadsheet? Please link it in your signature if you do. (If you don’t have a spreadsheet, you need one.)
Are you home testing? You’re going to need to test frequently through this cycle to ensure his bg is not going too low. If it is dropping too low, you’re going to need to use food (low carb, medium carb, high carb, honey/syrup) depending on the numbers to boost his numbers. Do not feed too much at a time—just a tsp or two and then test in 30 mins.

thanks, i just tested BG and it was 205. looks like food did its job. what is the significance of feeding a tsp at a time? is it to make sure he doesnt get too full? In the past when he dipped low, i just gave him a whole pouch of food- is that bad?

i can't do the google sheet but i have made spreadsheets in the past + it never got much use/comment so i didn't keep up with it. i do keep my own record of all readings though. here's some old #s, first is nov 2025-mar 2026, second is last month July 2026:

Yes, the idea is to feed him enough to bump him into safe numbers but make sure he's not overfull. Higher carb food can inflate the numbers for a couple hours, but the numbers can drop again once the carbs are worn off. Keeping him a little hungry will make sure he'll eat again should his numbers dip down again.

For the future, overdoses “can” cause low numbers for several cycles so you were very lucky.

We use google spreadsheets here specifically because they are easy for members, they incorporate well into the forum and can be linked in the signature block, and they auto-update which is crucial if a member is working low numbers. Excel SSs don’t work well here.

If we let every member bring in their own SS, we could not act as quickly to help people. We just don’t have the time to decipher a lot of differently formatted spreadsheets. Listing BGs does not help us help you as we need to see patterns over a few weeks’ time.

Most members will not give you any dosing advice if you don’t have a SS linked that is quick and easy for them to use and interpret as they are familiar with it. We don’t need to know or care why you don’t use google but if you want to post here and need dosing advice, etc, we need you to have one of our SSs which means you have to use google.

If you need help doing one or want me to do one for you, I’m happy to do it and transfer your data over.
