I can't find an error message e-4 for that meter o_O the LO could mean low BG or could also be an error, I don't think it will be low BG as I think Noodle didn't have a shot yesterday. Is that right? When was her last shot?

It is possible that you are adding the blood to the test strip too soon.

If I remember correctly, the Confirm is the one that you have to add the sample to the strip within a set amount of time after inserting the strip into the tester. I used to use one of those and if I was having trouble getting the blood sample right away, I would take the strip out and put it back in.....as it times out.....

You are doing great Grandma Kathy!

I'm not familiar with an E-4 error on the Confirm meter. I've got a number of E-7 errors, which is "insufficient sample" and a couple of "Lo" readings, which also turned out to be due to an insufficient amount of blood on the strip. Are you putting the strip all the way in the meter just before you add the blood? If so, I wonder if the code you're getting is actually F-4, which is the coding for the strip - I think you'll get an error if you add blood to the strip while that code is showing.

Nice, I was thinking to go with .5 again as it shouldn't be too much to risk putting her in danger. Now that you have given that and (I assume) she's just eaten I would leave it to a bit later to try and get the test. At +1 hours after the shot there is likely to be a bit of a spike from the food, waiting 2 hours will be better and if unsuccessful then, and Noodle permits, you could try every hour up to about 5/6 hours after the shot until you get one.

You won't be able to get hold of them until tomorrow but here is the number for the relion people so they can walk you through what might be going wrong: 1-855-776-0662, Monday through Friday, 8am-6pm EST. I would ask them to send you some control solution too (it's free here, I assume it would be free for you too) so that you can check that part of the meter operation.

ETA - I just saw you had E-7? in Noodle's last condo - that one is for insufficient blood

Kathy, you are doing great and I'm sure you'll get it figured out.

Noodle, you be a good kitty for your Grandmabean and let her learn how to help you!

Here's the possible messages and their meanings

After you put the strip in, you should see F-2, F-3 or F-4 and then a flashing "blood droplet"

If you're seeing that, then it's good to go and take your sample....after that, if you get one of the error messages, check to see which one it is

Keep up the good work Kathy!! We're all behind you!

i really think that i didnt have enough blood she is eating and walking around and playing. i will try again in the am thank you sooo much for the meter readings they will be a great help.
thank you all so much i can see why patricia stays so grounded with noodle

Don't forget to try the gentle milking if there isn't enough blood from the poke.

Also, if you are using a lancing device you could try turning it up a little higher to get a deeper poke and make sure the device is flush against the ear when you do the poke. Don't worry if you go all the way through Noodle won't notice the difference and when that happens you sometimes get a better blood drop on the side of the ear that you didn't poke!

I love your can do attitude - with that going for you you'll be every bit as good at it as Patricia is by the time she gets home :)

The learning curve is pretty steep with taking care of a diabetic cat - you're doing fine, kathy.

I think you're getting the hang of it and before long you'll have it. Practice makes perfect!

a lot of us use a tissue/paper towel to put pressure on the back side of the ear while poking.....
that usually gets a good sample.

it does take some practice to get the timing just right....

sounds like you will get there. ;)

Patricia, here!
You're doing great, Mom! But I've told you that already.
You probably just didn't get enough blood, I've gotten both very low readings and the E-7 message for that with my Confirm.
FYI for everyone helping if it gives you more ideas for tips: we do paw pad testing with Noodle. The ears are a no-zone for her, haha. I've never done it, but maybe a rice sock would help make getting enough blood easier?

Thank you again, FDMB. I can't explain how wonderful this community is and how much it puts me at ease to know you're all here for support while I can't be. And with that, I'm off! Cheers! :p

Yes...a rice sock can help....anytime the area is warmed, it's going to bring blood vessels to the surface ...another option is a washcloth soaked with warm water and put into a Zip-lock bag
