Candi is 12 years old and was on Nulo Dry Food for a few years with a couple of cans of Nulo Canned food each month. Then when she started drinking and peeing alot the vet did blood test and told us her Sugar was in the 300 range but since their wasn't sugar in her urine they had just decided to watch it. She was then diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. With that she was doing good until she developed a Rodent Ulcer. The vet started her first on Depo Steroid Shot. It still wasn't getting well so back to the vet 2 weeks later this time for an Antibiotic Shot in combination of another Depo Steroid Shot. After she was over the shots they wanted her back in for another check of her Sugar and this time they did not only the Blood Glucose but also a urine test which led to sugar being in her urine. At this time her sugar was 550. It was still only a week after the second shot so her Vet wanted to give it a good 2 weeks for the Steroids to get out of her system. This was today's visit again with a Blood Glucose of 500.
He did start her on a Rx Diet of Purina Pro Plan DM to see if this will work on lowering her blood glucose and if not he then wants to try her on oral medication along with it. Trying to let insulin be the very last resort.
I was checking her Blood Sugar each and every day and it was staying a little over 300 and it is that he believes that some may be stress related for her Sugar being 500 which is why I believe he is trying each step first before going to insulin.

I hope the diet change helps! You should know that there are better (and cheaper) options for diabetic-appropriate food than the DM, though. At the top of this forum is a post with a link to a list of foods and their carb content-- for everday feeding, you want foods with less than 10% carbs.

Another thing you should know is that the oral medication isn't a great option for treating diabetes (unless there are unavoidable constraints that make it impossible to do insulin injections). It seems to stress the pancreas (making later healing more difficult) so if I were you I'd be very cautious about starting that. Especially when the diabetes may be partially due to a steroid-- sometimes it can resolve on its own, as well.

A Rodent Ulcer is just a fancy name for a mouth ulcer on her upper lip. That I am hopeful for that the change in diet will help. I have been testing at home and her numbers are in the 300 range and have been for a good two weeks. She is now almost 3 weeks past the last steroid injection. We weren't told beforehand and I just learned that all can food is best for her. We just recently started her on nothing but canned food after slowly getting her used to not wanting her dry food. I saw that and thanks. I read more about Purina Pro Plan DM and I didn't mind the cost involved as it was about the same price as her Nulo canned food. I just do like care for any can food that has a bunch of by products or any kind of Meat Meal being I know where they get it from. Knowing she is getting food that is low in carbs but also good for her is most important to us.

I do know she is quit the wiggle worm when trying to just check her blood sugar and when I mentioned that to my vet, I believe that is why he recommended we try oral medication. Yes, after reading that going the insulin way is best with possible remission, that will be where I would like to go should her numbers be up when she goes back to the vet next month.

Hi, just curious if the rodent ulcer clear away and what helped it the most? My kitty has one and I am hesitant on giving him steroids or antibiotics. Trying to see if there a natural way of addressing the problem. Thanks!

Mayl her treatment was the Steroid Shot at first, which as you can see from her Spreadsheet made her sugar go up, then 2 weeks later they gave her another with an antibiotic in it. Then again a second go around with the steroid shot making her sugar go up even more. I believe it was the antibiotic shot that helped more than the steroid shots. Also in addition I used a holistic approach and got some of the Epic Health Repair. I sprayed her ulcer 3 times a day, sprayed it in her food 2 twice a day then once a day in her water. Then we were putting her left over food from the can in a plastic sandwich container so we did away with that and used one of our small corelle bowls from my dish set.
Also every day I washed her food and water dish with good hot soapy water and I believe between the antibiotic and the Epic Health Repair as well as not putting her food in a plastic container is what got it well.
I also tried Niacin but it made her actually drink 3 times the water that she normally drank.
