Hi all. It's been 2 years since I was here last with Abby but her numbers have been steadily climbing and I strongly suspect we'll be back to posting daily within the next couple weeks as I once again find the mental strength to begin shooting again. The trickier part for this run will be her relatively new diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. She was scheduled to get radioactive iodine in 3 weeks but that may have to be postponed because they won't take her unless some diabetic criteria are met first. I thought we'd slide by but it's not looking promising at this point.

I just wanted to introduce myself again and say 'hey' since odds are high we'll be back for awhile. Abby was only on insulin for about 2 weeks last go-around but only time will tell if we're that lucky this time. I've already re-printed out all the pertinent reminder info for storage and hypo too :)

Have a great day everyone and we'll likely be back soon!

Hi Kristin...my Raja was OTJ for 9 months and I noticed her numbers climbing. I brought her in for a blood test and urinalysis too. She is back getting a little touch of insulin now an her numbers are improving some. She is on .25u Lev.
I assume you have had her teeth checked and blood work done as well? Sometimes a little infection or inflammation might raise the numbers.
I hope some of the more experienced Beans will be around to take a look at Abby's SS...you are in the right place as you know! Keep on testing and hopefully you will see what needs to be done. With the hyper T involved, others with experience with that will give added suggestions...Nice to meet you!

What are you fe4eding and maybe tell us the feeding schedule, okay? the food does influence the numbers too...so many things to think about, right?...hope your stay will be a short one...

Thanks, and yes you're right, I forgot to include some other potentially important info: Abby is on FF Chunky Turkey, and has been every since I found this board in 2008! She gets fed twice a day. Her teeth should be fine since her last dental was in late July and prep for that included blood work which came back A-OK. Actually, I scheduled the dental because I saw the beginning of numbers creep and I was hoping that was the root cause. Also, Abby is 13 years old.

She's had a rather slow increase in numbers from what had been normal for the 2 years OTJ but now it seems to be increasing faster. I'm trying to not react too fast, plus I'm REALLY hoping she can slide through until her iodine treatment. Like most of us, I'd rather deal with only one illness at a time if I'm afforded that option!

Kristen

We're new here but welcome you back even though you probably would rather not be! I hope this is just a little blurp for Abby and she'll get back down to her normal numbers and back OTJ soon.

Hello Kristen. Have you tried sitting Abby down and having a heart to heart with her? Maybe if she hears the juice may come back, she'll come down? :-D Anyway, here's hoping this is just a small bump in the road for you guys.

awww Kristin, I'm sorry to see that Abby's numbers are creeping up. Thyroid can really throw things out of whack until that is under control. It's a catch-22. From what I understand, diabetes doesn't necessarily rule out I-131, but it does add some new considerations.

My best advice would be to keep feeding small meals. Test before the meal and again about 3-4 hours after the meal, to see if her pancreas is bringing the numbers down. Then schedule a vet visit to be sure there isn't anything other than the thyroid that could be causing the numbers to go up (like any kind of infection). A urinalysis and bloodwork would be a good idea.

Thanks everyone for the kind words of encouragement. You all have excellent suggestions and I'll try the post-meal testing as well as having a little discussion :-D . Overall she appears to feel generally fine. No excess urination (except she half-missed the box inexplicably the other day) or excessive thirst. Hungrier yes, but she often goes through phases there. If I didn't know what to look for or know her BG I wouldn't have noticed a thing.

Her hyperT has been regulated on meds since July, if I remember correctly. I'm told the diabetes only plays a role in her I-131 treatment if she has been regulated less than a month with numbers above 250. So technically as long as she stays under that we'll move forward there. If not, then I just wait until she's insulin regulated.

Thanks again and I hope you all have good surfing days and nights!
