Hello everybody. This is my first time posting here, so forgive me if I don't do something properly. My cat, Whiskey, has been diabetic since October. I have never done a spreadsheet, typically just monitor his sugars prior to his morning and evening insulin, and my mom takes his sugar usually around 5/6 hours after his insulin dosage. Unfortunately, thats about all he will allow us to do. With that being said, his blood sugar typically stays in the 400 range prior to insulin, and is usually anywhere between 230-340 throughout the day. We typically write down his sugars, but don't have a spreadsheet(my 65 yr old mother is old fashioned and prefers to write things down when she remembers). We monitor his sugar with a Reli-On meter, and just recently truly got him regulated and got him to his old grumpy self.

We were referred to Young Again Zero catfood, and he has always been on fancy feast classic pate/friskies pate since his diagnosis. Since swapping him to Young again along with the wet food, his sugars have been slowly dropping, and now he is reading at 110-150 prior to insulin, and today he read at 80 at his 6 hour mark. This is the first time he has ever read this low. Should we lower, or withhold his insulin? Could he be going into remission? I want to start keeping better track of his sugars via a spreadsheet, if possible, but I don't know where to begin, and I don't want to send him into hypo.

For reference, he recieves 3u of Lantus/2x a day.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
It would be really helpful if you could set up a spreadsheet so we can really help you. It is very hard to give dosing advice without seeing the BG data. You could add in the BG your mother takes at +5 or +6. Do you think that is possible.
I will give you the link to in anyway HELP US HELP YOU. This link also has the link to the hypo kit which I hope you have set up….it’s really important….also the link to the signature which tells us about Whiskey so we don’t have to keep asking you. It will sit at the bottom of all your posters and is very helpful. We can help you a lot if we have the data.
Are you using a syringe to give the insulin or a pen?
If you are using a syringe I would reduce the dose to 2.75 units. If you are feeding any dry food you need to reduce the dose if it goes under 90.
If you are using a pen, I would recommend you go out and buy some syringes so you can reduce in smaller amounts than 1 unit increments.
The syringes you need for Lantus are U100 3/10 30 or 31 gauge 6 or 8 mm insulin syringes which you can buy at Walmart or pharmacies that sell diabetic supplies
If you are using the pen I would reduce the dose to 2 units until you can get some syringes. It’s not ideal but you need to be safe.
Here are our DOSING METHODS. You need to be following the SLGS method feed dry food.
He is still a good way off remission yet but it’s good he is needing less insulin,
Keep asking questions

Hi there, I had replied on your FB post. Glad to see you came over!

One other thing - the midcycle BG tests are great, but you do want to test at times other than the +5/+6 when possible. +5/+6 is a common nadir for most cats, but not all. Some earlier, some later - so varying your testing times can make sure you're not missing any other low numbers.
