In early April my cat Lotus developed pancreatitis and as a result diabetes. She has since recovered and as my
doctor and the specialist at MedCal Pet Foods (apparently if you use/sell it they will let vets call their specialists for
consult for free) thought she might 'throw off' the diabetes she has. She has had normal readings for the past 10 days
so I no longer have to give her insulin or take her blood readings. She goes back to the vet in one month for a final
blood test for 'stablizing blood gluose'. Anyway I wanted to thank everyone so much for all their help and advice and support. Like most newbies I was totally frantic and because it was Easter weekend I could not phone the vet for advice when things happened. This website really rocks! Now I have to keep a close watch on Lotus as apparently she will now
been prone to more bouts of pancreatitis. At least now I will know what to look for. I had bought a lot of diabetic stuff
like needles etc and I have donated them to a low income cat owner who has a newly diagnosed cat in the name of the website. Thanks so much again!

Personally, I would continue with home testing, at least twice a day for the next month, then once a day for the month after that, then a couple times a week. Just to really be sure she's in remission.

So, what are you feeding?
And what were her normal readings?

And she will be prone to diabetes as well as pancreatitis, so hang onto the glucometer and test strips and monitor daily until you have 2 weeks of normal glucose (40 - 150 mg/dl in US), then phase out to weekly, and then monthly. Note that any infection (dental, bladder) may bring on the diabetes again.

There's no need to go into the vet's office, home testing is much more accurate, as there is no vet stress to elevate the glucose levels.

Don't give up on testing, maybe less frequent over time . And be alert for any changes. My Missy went OTJ within a month of diagnosis, due to a diet change. She went almost 5 months in normal numbers (usually 60-100's) and then started wanting more food. Because it was a change for her, I checked her and she was high, again. She has been on Lantus for 9 months now and still very unregulated. I have yet to figure out what caused the relapse, even though I have not given up trying.
Just be aware that it is possible that your cat could relapse and be alert for changes to behavior as clues ti check the BG. I hope your experience is different than ours, just be aware they CAN relapse.
