My kittie was first diagnosed in July 2010 and went off the juice after two months. Basically had a three year honeymoon and he was back on the juice (and DKA) last fall in September. Cause - needed another dental (had one two years prior). So dental was done, and kitty was off the juice again shortly after. But now he's back on six months later, and the vet said he needs another dental (and I looked at his mouth - not pretty). I know diabetics have a reduced ability to fight bacteria and therefore need dentals more often, but THIS often? Every six months? Anybody else encounter this?

It seems very soon, unless there was a tooth that was starting to get bad that they left alone. I just had Hidey's dental done last Thursday and we knew he had one bad tooth since having 3 pulled last year. I told them if there was any that looked like it was starting to get bad PULL IT! Come to find out there was one. So he had 2 removed, I'm hoping this stops him from going in next year.

My Fenway had several teeth pulled last year due to severe gingivitis. He stopped eating and would barely drink water because his mouth hurt so much. This also made his b/g higher. Once his teeth were pulled and he healed, he caught up on the food he missed out on over the course of a few days and was much better.

Hope this helps!

Hi there

My Black Kitty is the poster child for the importance of good dental hygiene. Without a doubt for BK bad teeth and gums turned out to be his Achilles heel.

12/08/2008 13u Lantus, first major dental with the dental specialist. x-rays revealed further resorptive lesions under the gumline - he had about 8 teeth removed.
01/04/2009 he was down to 8u Lantus, no R and tasted HC for the first time
04/12/2009 he was down to 3u Lantus.

04/20/2009 red crept back into his ss and back up in dose he went -
05/25/2009 back up to 5.25u Lantus . . .
05/29/2009 back to the dentist for further extractions
10/23/2009 OTJ

He had yearly cleanings with his regular vet after he went OTJ until eventually a couple years ago all his remaining teeth were removed.

I did jokingly ask my vet if he could remove them all ha ha...
But yeah, it's not just one tooth - they all look bad and his gums are red around all of them again!

There is a condition called stomatitis wgere the mouth is inflamed, sometimes bloody, and very painful. Treatment can require full mouth extraction of the teeth with dental x-rays to ensure no roots or teeth fragments remain. Another treatment is Dallas syrup, a proprietary blend of ingredients which has been helpfulfor some cats.

What does bartonella do to cats? He hasn't received a flea and worm treatment in a few years since he doesn't go outside anymore (allergies)

Bartonella has been found in cats with oral lesions such as stomatitis. Ruling it out or treating it if present helps refine treatment. Spitzer tested positive for Bartonella and after treatment had greatly reduced runny eyes and nose, which we'd assumed was due to feline herpes.
