I came across a 3rd option for blood ketone testing for the home user
CardioChek Home Blood Testing Device The company is in NY, USA
The meter is pricey ($94.95 +tax & shipping), however, the ketone strips are under $5.00
CardioCheck Ketone Test Strips, 6 ct, add $21.95 (3.66 ea)
CardioCheck Ketone Test Strips, 25 ct, add $92.96 (3.72 ez)
Blood sample is large: 15 µL of whole blood - you might actually want to aim for the ear vein, rather than around it.
As a bonus, you can use it to test your own blood: There are separate strip types for each of these tests: total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, glucose, ketones. I have no idea how the 1st 3 would pan out on cats!
